Can someone set me straight about whether ASUS is a manufacturer (as opposed to Dell and HP and Toshiba who have their computers built by other companies)?

I'm thinking it's better to not pay for the HP/Dell etc label, and also better not to have to deal with their customer service.

I'm about to replace my toshiba laptop, and am leaning away from the big boys and towards reseller laptops.

    All advice appreciated!

Yes, ASUS manufactures their own notebooks, and they OEM for some big names like Sony and Mac as well..

The ASUS resellers that hangout in these forums like ProPortable, BTOTech, PowerNotebooks, MilestonePC, etc ... have proven to give excellent service to customers, and are very helpful around these forums as well. You should have no problems with service if you get a notebook from one of them.

Well, it totaly your decision, yes DELL uses ODMs, like Compal, Qaunta and other big companies.

There's nothing wrong with buying from big companies or small companies, or resellers, aslong as you get what you want.

If you will out the FAQ, we can further help you find right laptop for you.

The isn't or at least shouldn't be about "paying for a name", it's about getting a better product and more personalized service and support. That may cost the same or even more than the "bigger names", but if you're ready to step into something better and have an appreciation for the finer things in life.... you'll probably like what Asus makes.
