Asus has the setup of you buying a notebook from a reseller such as Powernotebooks.com and many others, where you get 1 year warrenty throgh asus and then can add another 2 years if you please. I have read and think that that warrenty is then throgh the dealer such as Powernotebooks.com. To be honest and not hardsh these dealers are independent and dont have to my knowledge a corporate backing, so what happens if a company goes under and then there is nobody to fix your PC. What happens then?

You're right and wrong.... Ensemble models are covered simply by Asus... the extended warranty, as long as it's Asus' Ensemble Warranty Extension Package, is covered simply through Asus. In the US, that extension is only a north american one, not global.... but it's covered through Asus.
If you're talking about buit-on, custom notebooks, the entire warranty is through your dealer and Asus has nothing to do with it..... The dealer is backed by Asus for one years time from their original barebone purchase, but that is between the dealer and Asus and not Asus and the end-user. There are some weird circumstances of fly by night dealers who aren't around or don't do support or service and then Asus helps in certain ways..... usually the try to get other dealers to help take care of these situation, but the more reputable dealers have stopped helping in these cases (at least we have put our foot down) because the end-user may be happy that another company was willing to help, but the cost would entirely be out of our pocket and the resentment they have for the dealer they bought from and Asus still remains and really nothing comes of it besides that Asus gets off without doing jack and there is nothing that happens to the original dealer...... But that may be more than you needed to know........ but if this is the type of notebook you were looking at, then I urge you to look at reseller ratings and talk to Asus about who is good...... I'll tell you right now that everyone and their brother sells Asus notebooks right now and you could snap your fingers and sell them tomorrow if you wanted...... most places don't last 6 months, let alone a year....... there are a handful of companies who have lastest 2-3 years and to my knowledge there are only 2-3 of us who have more than 3 years in... and no one longer than us.... our first Asus notebook sale itself was a little over 5 years ago now. In all honesty, even 5 years of selling one product isn't a lot in the overall scheme of things.... but when looking at the rest of the companies selling Asus' notebooks.... that's like considered BC (before centrino).....
If you have any other questions, just let me know... good question though. -

Good question llama,
If you purhcase a extended warranty through a reseller it is most likely through a 3rd party company that only sells warranties. Like Justin from ProPortable states make sure you work with a dealer who has a reputable history and has been doing it for more than 2-3 years. Our first notebook sale was nearly 5 years back.
Good luck in your search and hope I was helpful.
If you have any other questions, just ask!
