Just purchased a refurb U46E from Newegg. There a noticed in the box that the restore partition had been removed and should use windows for a backup.
Now I see a local drive R: that I can view and it appears the restore stuff is there but the Asus restore program says no file. Any idea how to make it work?
    Thanks

If the partition is intact, you can use a tool like dd from a live linux CD to copy it to a raw image file, or copy it directly to a USB key. Then you need a bootable GRUB USB key to point it to boot that partition, from the GRUB command line. That's the way I have backed up recovery partitions and restored the original OS image for resale.

It's also possible that you just need to set the R partition as hidden, since that is how it should be by default. You can do this with any number of free partitioning utilities or even a windows installer dvd and the recovery console.

A third possibility is finding out what type of image(s) are on the recovery partition, copying them to an external drive, and then using whatever utility to restore them.

For example my Lenovo X220 has a few WIM images that I restored (after trashing the bootloader that would let me use the factory restore utility) by installing WAIK on another computer and connected the hard drive in an external enclosure. There was a script on the recovery partition that gave me all the parameters I needed to manually restore.
