I can't boot up so I'm going to recover the first partition, but how do I recover my data? How do I slave it to my desktop and get data that I need? I have the G51. Thanks.

Will this work? Before I was about to go out and get an adapter to slave it to my desktop I noticed the hard drive looked a bit different. It didn't have the pins the guides I read were talking about to connect to the adapter.
I was also told to run live CD with Linux or Ubuntu, not sure what that does? -
It will work.
If you can't boot up at all, then a Live CD won't help any.
How far into the boot process does it get? -
I will get an Windows Error message with only 2 options to try and fix it or run windows normally. Both leads to another error window.
-
Then a LiveCD MAY work in this case. I assume that you've tried to insert the Windows setup DVD and try to repair your Windows Installation.
-
No I do not believe a Windows setup came with the notebook.
-
If you have a G51 then you have both a recovery partition and a recovery disk.
-
LiveCD + USB flash or hard drive should be enough to recover your files.
If not buy a USB HD enclosure, and put the corrupted hard drive in there and plug it into your desktop. -
-
-Run an operating system using a Live CD (whether it be on a linux or windows environment)
-Access your hard drive as per normal then move your files to a USB stick. -
So would a Windows 7 CD work? I got it but haven't installed and upgraded it yet.
-
Unfortunately Windows 7 doesnt have a LiveCD feature. Live CD's just temporarily loads the OS into your RAM or HD.
Where exactly was your data saved in your current hard drive?
Btw, have you tried doing a repair install first? -
I wanted to get files saved in My Documents.
What is repair install?
Sorry I'm not too familiar with this stuff, first time using Vista and haven't had this kind of problem before so I don't want to screw any chance that I have of recovering my data. -
You should try a repair install. Windows Setup CD will try to repair your installation. Worse comes to worse, you can just install a new copy of Windows on your existing harddrive without having to delete all the data on it.
-
my vote goes with livecd. if you can open the file manager, you should have no problem copying what you need to another partition or removable.
-
Repair install just overhauls the windows system files, which is where the corruption will probably be. Your documents and programs stay intact.
The problem that you might face with a liveCD is permissions to your My Documents folder. You cant just access it. -
Then you should try to do the clean install, without formatting your partition. You gotta reinstall Windows anyways so I wouldn't bother with the LiveCD unless time is a factor (like you need it now). -
I did the LiveCD to get my documents so I could continue working on my paper and transfer some files to my desktop.
Repair install would be booting up with my Recovery DVDs? -
Or just using a plain jane Windows setup DVD.
-
The only discs that came with.
-
Humm, not familiar with Asus recovery DVDs. So I'm not sure if they have a repair option or not.
-
They do not. However, the windows 7 upgrade discs if you've received them, should.
-
Am I able to just stick my Win7 discs in and boot from CD drive to install or should I still try to recover first partition first?
-
-
Alright, I booted up Win7 discs and its repairing now, I had a popup about corrupt file in system32 and to run chkdsk utility before that. Might take over an hour. :S
-
I believe the repair attempt failed. Still having the errors.
-
Boot erd or hirens or ultimate -boot cd/dvd.
Connect usb stick or hdd .. save the files you need if they accessible.
If hdd fully corrupt can run data recovery softwares from the same cd-s above.
When recovered all the data run a full format to check if the hdd got any corrupt sectors, if it does then rma or replace the hdd.
Not worth to keep using a hdd that got corrupted sectors ones it will happen again. -
Yeah, time to reinstall Windows.
-
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped me recover my data. Too bad I wasn't able to repair it so I had to do a recovery, but at least I got the important stuff. Just finished its recovery.
-
Now it's back to school for for you.
 -
Frustrating, I had to go to the computer lab which is always crowded. :S Relieved this is over.
