I have posted a topic similar to this several times, but I wanted to get an idea of how many other W3J owners experience this phenomenia. Already on my second W3J, I still experience a slight loss in battery charge overnight. Please vote as to whether you experience this or not.

After the battery is fully charged and the latop is put away, it will loose part of its charge (usually 1 to 2%) overnight.

How do we tell that it looses part of its charge by 1 to 2%? Sorry for being so thick about this issue... but I really want to know.

Basically, after you fully charge the battery, turn off your laptop for the day, and come back the next, does the orange battery light come on when you plug it back in.

    Earthdan,
After you fully charge your battery and turn the machine off for the day, does the light come on the next day when you start your machine up?

The phenomenon you are referring to is known as " trickle-charging". As far as I know it's perfectly normal to see the charging light occasionally come on, even when on battery power.

    ~ Brett

Edit: Trickle charging actually isn't actually what happens in modern laptops since new laptops usually use lithium-ion batteries which do not use trickle-charging. Instead, they allow the battery to drain a tiny bit before charging them back up fully.

This is not an occasional thing. Everytime I full charge my notebook and turn it off, the next day the charging light comes on for the first minute or two to charge back up to 100%.

Do you notice an impact on the life of your battery? Dos this happen when you leave the notebook plugged in at night or only if you unplug it? I don't believe my W3J shows this behavior but I leave it plugged in whenever I'm near a socket and probably only turn it off one night out of every seven or so.

I have not noticed an impact on the life of my battery. This happens when I unplug the unit and put it in my bag. Like I said this is the second W3J I have had that has this symptom. Even if it is left plugged in, if I remove the power plug briefly and plug it back in while it is off my battery light comes on briefly for a second.

I do recall that happening but I don't think its any cause for alarm. If the orange light is only on for a minute or two its definitely not a problem. If it was on for say 30 mins plus (and your battery lost a significant amount of charge) then I would say you've got a problem. I think the best way to check the health of your battery is to look at the percent wear. You can do this with a couple different programs, I use mobilmeter and it says mine is 13 percent. For a battery used occasionally for 1 year, I think this is quite acceptable. I can still squeeze over 3.5 hours out of it if I have to (no joke).

I think you should be fine tho Rosemarycane, I'm sure this phenom happens to other computers too.

That sounds normal. If I unplug my W3J for any more than 1/2 a minute, it then charges itself back up as soon as I plug it back in. I don't generally unplug it at night and then recharge it in the morning but I suspect the same thing will happen. Perhaps I'll try it tonight and let you know...

    Nrbelex,
If you would, set up your test like this:

Fully charge your laptop then shut it down. Unplug the power cord, and leave it that way overnight. Then in the morning, plug the power cord back in. If the orange light comes on when you do so, that is what I an experiencing. My battery looses between 1 and 2% charge overnight.

I performed the test as described and after plugging it back in in the morning, my laptop started charging due to the slight discharge overnight. Nothing to be concerned about at all...

This happens to me all the time. You dont have to wait over night though, it just happens when you unplug the cord, then wait for a few moments and plug it in again. It will have an orange led, then turn off.

I dont notice a decrease in battery life. I get around 2.5 hours with screen on 2nd lowest brigthness, Wifi on, and BT off.

    Earthdan and Brett,
The other thing I notice to (completely seperate issue), is that sometimes when my computer resumes from standby the CD-ROM drive does not show up under my computer. This does not happen all the time, but when it does I have to put my computer into standby again so it will recognize it. Ever notice this problem?

I don't put my laptop into standby enough to notice this but I can tell you that it's almost definitely a driver issue. If it were me, I would reinstall the driver for the CD player and give it a whirl to see if you still have the issue.
