Im planning on getting a w3j and it will be coming back and forth to work with me. I plan be riding a bicycle into work now and then and would like to be carrying the notebook in my backpack. Is this a bad idea? Would i show up to work and find that my hard drive has died? Is there a better way then a backpack to carry a laptop on my bike? On a side note anyone recommend a good backpack for that size laptop?

I don't think you will experience any problems as long as you buy a very good and protecting bag.
Have a look here http://www.ebags.co.uk -
Doesn't seem like it would be a problem, laptops are ofcourse designed for travel but like Empulse said, a nice protective carrying case would be a good idea, just don't fall off that bike now =D

You need to get a good case i forgot what brand. But its made of some type of impact foam. would be perfect for that.

Basiaclly - there are some nice notebook backpacks that can absorb a lot of jolts.... Kensington makes some nice ones with airbags in them... -
And remember to make sure the hard drive is OFF before you set off. When the hard drive head is parked, it can withstand much more vibration and shock.

Out of curiosity, is that as simple as fully powering the machine down?
-
And yea, don't just simple, start-> shut down, or hibernate, etc. Watch it turn off, because sometimes Windows has something that doesn't respond and needs you to verify it to close it. -

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't really move back and forth too much as that would shake up your laptop like a cocktail and that's not too great for your harddrive.
Great question and it's great you ride your bike to work instead of driving. Save our planet~! Ride your bike~!

Do that, and as long as you don't fall off the bike, it should be fine. A backpack full of things like a change of clothes for work would help as well.
You may want to consider putting it in a large plastic/waterproof bag. No matter how much you think you've sealed up your bag, water gets in. That's why when I dress for a ride in the rain, I aim for warmth rather than waterproofness. Water will get in... -
And do be careful of leaking water bottles if you carry them inside your bag!

Depending on the route you would travel, I would be a little nervous with a laptop in a bag, moreso if I took a spill than anything else. Maybe consider a hard-pack like this one.
