Right now, does the V1 totally outweigh the G1?

I'm sure this is debated ad nauseum in other threads, but I'm in a bit of a hurry, so please accept my apologies. I'm already the happy owner of an Asus A8js, but my boyfriend is looking to buy, and from what I can see the V1 has superior specs (better graphics, better CPU) for the same price at this moment. I assume it came out later. Are there other things I should be aware of? This machine would be used for school and a bit of gaming- nothing too intense, just WoW or such.

Please let me know if there is anything else we should think about. Thank you!! This forum helped me choose the A8 (i wanted to wait for the V1, but it took too late in coming out)

Edited to add: I see the V1 is on preorder. Is the G1 up for an update soon?

Well, in my opinion the V1s does outweigh the G1s if you plan on moving it around all day. However if its gonna sit on a desk all day and run intense games, get the G1s.

The V1s does not have better graphics capabilities than the G1s. The V1s has a 512MB 8600 GT GDDR2 whereas the G1s has a 256MB 8600 GT GDDR3. The jump from GDDR2 to GDDR3 is pretty significant and negates the effect of 512MB vs 256MB (by quite a bit actually, if synthetic benches are to be believed).

V1s is thinner, lighter, looks nicer, runs cooler, has a better CPU. The G1s has better gaming capabilities (the difference may not be as pronounced in real world situations).

Also, the V1s may have a battery issue, so you may want to look out for that.

Does he need long battery life? The Asus V1s gets about 2 hours and 30 minutes on battery.

The V1s is more of a business notebook. I enjoy its professional look. The graphics however are as good as the G1s, but if your bf is only looking to play WoW and other older games the V1s will be perfectly fine.

The V1s would certainly be a better choice for College / university as the G1S has alot of glowing green lights and ive seen it described as "Fisher prices "My first laptop"" It does look a bit dinky, Also its a fair bit heavier, You can get a modular battery (DVD drive slides out and the battery goes in the hole) to extend the battery life to over 5 hours.

The G1S is better for a gamer, both in looks and graphics performance. The V1S is more subtle in appearance and has inferior graphics performance.

The G1s has the same graphics card but has GDDR3 ram which means it has more memory bandwidth, The V1S is still a top of the line graphics card (2nd most powerful on the market, only beaten by the G1S and 2.4Ghz MBP)

I thought the G1S didn't look too good, but after the purchase heck I'm liking it more and more everyday. Can't imagine another notebook sitting on my desk now.

Thanks everyone! This was very helpful.. I didn't realize the G1 had GDDR3, that's really cool. I wish the weight weren't so high on that unit, and i probably wouldnt want the flashy green lights personally (since I use my laptop at school a lot), so I'll just let him know all this so he can make his own decision.

You can turn the green lights off if you want.

The build quality and materials of the V1 are head and shoulders above the G1. The G1 is simply an adapted A series chassis, as I recall.

You pay for the quality, but you get what you pay for. That isn't to say the G1 isn't a good system, but the V series is Asus' premier line of notebooks. The components aren't always bleeding edge, but IMO and others the quality makes up for that shortfall.

I cannot really describe the V1S as top quality build. It is good but there are some issues.

The main difference is the target group:

    - The G1S is built for gamers, it has more performance but it gets warmer and consumes more power as well. Its design is a typical "power-machine" design.

    - The V1S is a business line notebook. It has Centrino Pro features, a complete equipment, it is lighter, stays cooler and the battery lasts longer. Its design is very elegant.

I think this should explain the difference between V1S and G1S.

I'd liken the difference to a tuner car vs. a BMW. Both can be screaming fast, the tuner car has more raw power and more "look at me!" style. The BMW is screaming fast but grown up :) I like both, but when I was ready to order the G1S was more readily available, and since I like tuners... haha. I do not like rice rockets though, it's gotta be tasteful! But even my 55 year old dad said "Man that computer looks cool!"

They are both the same price... it isn't like the G1s is $300 cheaper than the V1s. And I've seen plenty of posts about problems with the V1s. More than the G1s, in fact.

The G1S definitely screams "gamer," as was intended I'm sure.

Agreed with Stella, got to say that Asus kind of overdid this a little... I mean, highlighted keys, splashes of green and the glowing gaming eye logo on the touchpad are excusable, but when you got two strips of green LED lights down the sides ... yeah .
