Just noticed that I can define a custom resolution for my external display in the Nvidia control panel. 2560x1440 @ 60Hz seems to work just fine, plus having 1080p on the internal display.
Are there any risks of doing this? I'm running a GT650M and the external display is a Dell U2711.

2560x1440 is not really a "custom" resolution for that monitor.
Doesn't the option pop up in the standard windows resolution change panel when you select that display?

No it doesn't. I was under the impression that the HDMI port and/or the GT650M did not support resolutions over 1080p, since it was not listed as available resolution. I'm well aware that my native resolution should be 2560x1440.
Oh well, so far it has not done anything unexpected!
