Because my previous thread got bogged down in a wide range of discussions, I am starting a new thread on this topic.
I am having terrific problems with my ASUS z70va functioning with my Belkin Super G router. The wireless card is an Intel Pro 2915 AGB. I also have an HP dv1000t with an Intel Pro 3845ABG which has basically no problems.
I had problems with the DSL service... but they have largely been solved.
My HP works fine with the wireless router but the ASUS works terribly.
So the next step is a new router, which I don't mind. at all. The Belkin's latest firmware update is 2004 and is not likely to improve. I also want to get a router that is more powerful and greater range.
Speed and range are of utmost importance to me...speed being by far the most important. I don't want any more "Page could not be displayed" or incredibly slow load times that still lead to "Page could not be displayed" or eventually load. This happens 60% of the time with the ASUS. It rarely happens with the HP. Even when they are in the same spot. SO I am presuming some kinbd of conflict between my router and the ASUS.
SO I have read NickSpohn's stickies on wireless and a number of other threads.
1. Though many people are recommending the Linksys WRT54G, many people have noted that the latest version, 5, is pretty bad, specs greatly reduced etc. SO that's out for me.
2. So, of the Linksys on Nick's sticky, these are the ones that interest me. My question is will they work with what I've got. I am a newbie to understanding the ins and outs of wireless... but I am eager to learn. What's in quotes is what Nick wroteand pictures of the routers can be found there..
a. Linksys WRT54GX
This one intrigues because of the possibility of getting the fastest speed model: WRT54GX4
BUT what is SRX? and will my two laptops work with it?
b. LinksysWRT55AG*
This appeals because it "looks to the future" and has high security, which is important to me. But is it as fast as the WRT54GX4? And is the WRT54GX4 significantly less secure?
On my other thread Nocturne_SA raised queries re: Netgear here
He suggests the following Linksys: WRT 300N
This Linksys looks very good to me... but anyone have any feedback?
Looking at the Netgears that Nocturne suggests, I have similar inquiries.

The WRT 300N will not work with your intel wireless card at least the N part of it.. It is for the new N standard which hasnt even been made a standard yet. You would have to purchase a pcmcia card to use with that router. At least the part that gives it greater range and makes it faster the N standard. Your intel 2915 card only supports A B G signals. So you just want a good G router unless you want to switch to a pcmcia card when home. You could use your intel card with it but you wont get the benifits of a pre N router if you do it that way.

You can get a good G router then add better antennas to it if you like. Also Mimo routers are the same you need a different card to take advantage of it. As long as your router uses WPA encryption which all new ones do then you have no need to worry about security. Unless you are like a spy or something.

These may be pretty good. the people on newegg give them good reviews. -
WHat do you think of this... Ervin suggested it on my other thread: Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. It makes me a bit nervouse as their tech support is in England, it is not 24/7 but on English Business hours and Europeans do not have the sam attitude towards customer service and satisfaction as Amerincans do. All my European friends are pretty astonished when they come here. -
LOL, we linked to the same unit. I hadn't checked out your link yet... when I did my other post.
If I order it and have difficulties... will you help? -
Ill be happy to help any way i can. You can even email me at [email protected] if you need assistance.
That unit looks pretty good. I have heard some good things about it. Remember if it doesnt work you can return to newegg within like 30 days. routers are normaly pretty easy to set up. So i wouldnt worry about it to much. -

Ok, so I go to NewEgg to buy this: BUFFALO WHR-HP-G54 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Turbo G High Power Wireless Cable/DSL Smart Router and it suggests that I should buy this: BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Ethernet Port Wireless Ethernet Converter up to 125Mbps Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA to go along with it. The two together will be sold at a small discount.
I don't even know what item number 2 is or what I woudl use it for.
DO I need it? I presume not... My more important question is: can I use it?
At the moment, I am extremely risk-averse and I want this wireless connection problem with my ASUS solved!!! I have no more itme to monkey around with this.
Help...! -
depending on where u are, i went to BestBuy here in Toronto, last month and picked up the wrt54g dreading it will be v5, but it was the 3. Model was WRT54G-CA
You might be able to get a few from some online stores. Check www.ncix.com i think they sell the wrt54g specified as the open source model -
