seeing these in person, the colors are not a flat color. they have a pearl in them. so its more like pearl brown, pearl graphite, pearl champagne.

Agreed on the not funny. Also in bad taste. Therefore I deleted the message.

And yours too, RangerXML, just to be impartial. :p

Congrats! I must say that the S101 is really sleek and appealing. If you have time do you mind taking some pictures of it? :D

I read the battery life is 4.5 hours... can anyone verify? I am thinking I'll keep my 1000HA.

Well, I added this to my stable and can provide a quick review after 48 hours of use:

I’m using it as a portable working computer for writing, surfing, emailing, messaging. I’m not using it to watch videos or store my music library. I’d probably feel fine using it for that when it’s on AC power. And I’ll give it a spin for media eventually. Here are my initial impressions (typed up on the bus on the way to work, emailed to me through webmail):

    1. The keyboard is much better than the Eee 701. I have average-sized hands. Touch-typing is much more comfortable - even on my lap on a bus doing the start/stop thing on a very windy road. The keys are a good size and feedback when typing is great. A lot fewer typos.

    2. Set up was easy. Initial charge on the battery took about 2.5 hours, then a typical Windows setup. The Windows updates (35 of them) took about 1.75 hours on a DSL line. Getting everything else I wanted (Firefox, AVG free, and several other apps) took maybe another hour.

    3. Typing, surfing, emailing are all snappy and quick with AVG and Windows firewall running. I'm not noticing any lag in saving/recalling documents or in any activity I'm performing. Running it on smart power, have FF (8 tabs), three Open Office docs, Yahoo! messenger, MSN messenger, and some minor photo edits with IrfvanView. Will probably dump OO for MS Office.

    4. Weight is great - portable without being a huge weight to carry around.

    5. Wireless. Connects quickly and easily (at least to unsecured networks). Haven't tried setting it up with the wireless router at home with encryption and a Vista PC.

    6. Crapware is minimal. MS Works and OpenOffice. Which may not be crapware to others.

    7. Temperature/fan. After an hour on my lap, it's noticeably warm, but nowhere near as hot as the 701 would get. The fan is very quiet. I'm getting no noise or vibration, but if I put my cheek next to the vent, I can feel the air blowing.

    8. Battery life. Using the "auto power save" feature, I used it for 2 solid hours (WiFi, FF, editing docs, editing photos; the screen was also set on the lower end of brightness, since it really doesn't need to be that bright) and it showed 86% power left in the battery.

    9. Matte screen. This is great. No glare/reflection issues from sun or lights.

    Now the downsides so far:

    1. It's almost too light. Using it on the bus during the commute was something of a balancing act. Thankfully, the battery (even though it’s a lightweight Li-Poly battery) is situated in the front, under the wrist rest. That helps a lot keep the base more stable IMHO (at least compared to the battery placement in the 701, which was at the back).

    2. The touchpad is too sensitive and I can’t find any adjustment for sensitivity. So, I turned off tapping. I'd love to use the tapping feature if it weren't so sensitive. Otherwise, it’s a very good size and I like the features on it (multi-finger recognition and functions).

    3. Asus' continued intransigence in how it places the right-shift key. There’s some software app that allows you to swap the right Page Up with the right Shift key. I’ll have to look into that.

    4. Price. I’m kind of on the fence about this. I think the MSRP for the S101 is too high. If you can find a deal though that knocks off a hundred bucks or so, it’s worth it.

    5. Storage capacity (kind of). It comes with 16GB SSD and Asus includes an additional 16GB card, so you get 32GB out of the box. Personally, I like the idea of storing my data on a removable card/USB stick - I can lock it with Axcrypt and keep it separate from the S101. I've actually been doing this for a while - I have cards/sticks with movies, music, data files, etc.

Overall and after just a few hours of use, I'm happy with it. Happier than with the 701. Much more comfortable for typing, definitely portable, has a larger footprint than the 701 but will still fit fine on a small table.

It comes pretty close to making me feel like I have a portable desktop. And if I add Live Mesh, I really will have access to my desktop.

Here's to hoping I still feel positive about it in a few months!
