Was considering the Asus S5N laptop - but considering that it is based on the M5N (which has fan problems) -- i'm wondering if the S5N has the same issue.

Anybody with an S5N (NOT an S5Ne - ULV Intel chip) care to comment? Does your fan go off, and if so, at what temp? Also, post the speed of your chip and if you're using a 7200 HD too. Mainly i'm interested to know the S5N fan gets "stuck" on just like the M5N.

What the hell is wrong w/ Asus and their fans!! I saw the same kind of posts on yet another model of Asus laptops.

    thanks!

s5n with a 4200rpm HDD here. the fan kicks in about 50 degrees, which is very rare when i am running on battery power.
but when plugged(full performance mode) the fan rarely stops.

Right, that is because that top performance mode can only even be reached when plugged in.

    2 questions:

    1) If i plugged in the laptop but then forced the CPU into a lower power mode, could i get the fan off? I.e., say i'm working somewhere and i do have an A/C outlet, but i don't want to hear the fan -- would i be able to essentially force it off by lowering the performance?

    2) Is the fan a loud one when it is on? I.e., w/ A/C power and the fan almost always running, how loud would you consider the fan compared to other laptops in the same size range?

When you are plugged in, you only have the performance power gear settings, so the lcd brightness and cpu are at full or near full.

When you're on battery you have the the different power options and only the highest power setting isn't available (only one ac).

Now, those are stock numbers..... You can modify power gear so that the cpu and lcd are lower when on AC, but out of the box, when it's plugged in it give you the best performance.
