would anyone know if the S5N would be able to accomodate the dothan? on the website it says that it accomodates the banias, nothing about the dothan. i think that the site isn't updated anymore. i saw on online stores S5Ns being offered with dothan chips. would that mean that in the future i can upgrade to a dothan, or is there a new model of the S5N? my S5N's got a 1.5 banias on it...

You should check the Asus site to see if there is a BIOS update for this notebook to support Dothan. That's pretty much all that is required to get the Dothan CPU's working in a Banias based notebook. The chips are pin compatible so it should just be a matter of BIOS update top support the Dothan and CPU swap.

this is an old thread that i read some time ago, but still have interest in.

if anyone can help, justin? is it possible to upgrade the cpu on my ulv 1.0 ghz s5n? i think its a banias chip, i wanted to upgrade to a possible 1.5 ghz or so cpu. can it be upgraded to a dothan, or do we have to stick to the banias?

    thanks.

    1. The old S5ne's with the 1.0ghz ULV cpu can't be upgraded at all... the cpu is soldered onto the motherboard.

    2. If you find an older black S5n which took a banias, it's not upgrade able to a dothan either..... the system is running on ddr266, where dothan's run 333.......

    3. The ONLY white S5n (in the states) that you can upgrade would be the 1.5ghz dothan units that they brought into the US starting in mid August of last year..... and you can upgrade those to a 2.1ghz if you so desired.

Same rules from 2-3 really apply to most all of their systems..... Number 1 is a little different though. They soldered it on there to make it "lighter".... well not having a socket certainly did take off some weight, but if it took off any ounce I'd be surprised.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I guess that I've max out this old girl...with all the RAM she can handle, although the HD can be upped to a higher speed i guess.

I'm such a multi-tasking demon and I don't think this processor can handle much more that I can throw at it.

Perhaps it should be time for me to pass her along to someone else [ :p]

    poor...s5n.

Actually there are both 100mhz (400) and 133mhz (533) Dothans, the former (such as the 755) would be compatable if the board recognises the CPU (check bios spec) while the latter (such as the 760) would not be.
