Does anybody know if the S5N (the 12 inch white one) can display over 1024x768 on an external monitor? I might want to get this model, but I want to be able to use it at 1280x1024 on my 19inch LCD at home...

    Thanks.

Yes, let me check on my M5...... I know you can go up to SXGA, but let me see what other options there are.

    Thanks,

thanks. btw, I heard the screen isn't 16 million colour quality. How many bit quality is it? 24 bit? 16 bit?

Most current consumer LCDs (apart from higher end MVA-panels) have an effective color resolution of 6 bit per component (RGB), 262144 colors, so don't worry too much about the 16.7 million colors or somesuch marketing numbers. Color reproduction quality *does* vary though, but most notebbok panels performances are limited by power consuption constraints and thus you really wouldn't want to do any work where colour accuracy is critical on a laptop anyways. For a notebook i'd say: Choose what you like and what looks /good/ to you, and not (unless you have perticular needs) bother with wether it looks *right*. Preferably have a look in person before you buy.

thx for the tip bugmenot. But I guess I was actually worried about the video card (I shouldn't have said the screen). I can tell the difference between the 16, 24 and 32 bit settings on my computer now.

Basically, I'm wondering what the video card can support...

I have the S5n and I run it at 32 bit with no problem. If you run it at less, you get a lot of banding and it looks pretty crappy. I don't notice that it slows anything down, but I probably wouldn't anyway since the quality of the image is more important to me than the speed.

Right now actually I have my S5 hooked up to my 17" external monitor. It is running at 1280x1024 and looks fine. It's not perfect but it's not bad. By not perfect I only mean that black text doesn't look quite as crisp and some text is very slightly foggy, but it really doesn't bother me. If I switch down to 1024x768 it looks really bad, so I'm fine with the higher resolution. Again, I don't notice any lag or anything.

I agree for the most part with bugmenot about the 16 million colors thing, but I have to admit that I DO notice the difference between the color depth of my S5 and my desktop computer. For casual use this is not going to be an issue, but if you are editing photographs or doing any serious graphics work (especially printing) it is something you will want to consider. I didn't think it was going to matter to me, but it does and I DO wish the S5 had the 16 million color depth. But then it wouldn't be the computer it is and I probably wouldn't have bought it for the reasons I did. It's just finding the balance of what you need and what you want.

I also wanted to mention that the only time i have ever heard the fan come on is when I'm using the external monitor. Take that for what it's worth.

I wrote a review of my S5n which is stickied at the top of the forum in the User Reviews thread. If you haven't read it and you're interested, it's there.

    Hope that helps.
