MXM is almost dead technology, and the Z/S96 does not have it.

Your x1600 should be good for at least a little while longer right? ;)

Hope so, I was just wondering what the options of me being able to swap to a slightly better GPU would be.

Current technology doesn't really support swapping of GPUs like desktops.

As coriolis said, MXM is almost dead, very few laptops have it, but even if you do have a laptop, you can't even upgrade the GPU because you basically can't get your hands on one to begin with.

For now, it will be, what you get in your laptop is what you have.

However, newer technology is changing this, especially ASUS's new XG Station which sports a 7900GS, it is an external GPU that works via express slot card, and will power an external monitor. Look to devices like that once the X1600 GPU starts become too weak for your needs.

z96j, s96j, z62, g1, g2, w7, all have dedicated "built-in" cards. They are not modular and can NOT be taken out.
w3j, a8j, on the other hand do have modular cards however you will never be able to change them even if they are mxm or not. Asus like any other manuf do not want the end user to have access to upgradeable vga cards. it does not make sense for them to allow it

I think it makes sense, but at the same time it will void warranties and novice users could damange parts making warranty "claims" a nightmare.
