A few days ago I reinstalled WinXP on my S96J. At the time I didn't have the original Asus driver CD with me, but I was able to get drivers for everything but the Ricoh card reader.

After a lot of hunting, I was able to find a Ricoh driver package on IBM's site (from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-61697). However, after running the install program, I get this in the Control Panel:

Last time I checked, the Ricoh Card Reader on the S96J does NOT support xD cards.

I have since gotten my hands on the original Asus driver CD and confirmed that the package I downloaded from IBM is identical in structure (same exact files and directories) although the versions in the IBM package are a step newer.

I then reinstalled the drivers from the Asus CD, using both the setup.exe and then manually through the CP - to no avail. When I insert an SD card nothing happens...no new drive in My Computer...nothing.

What's the problem here? How should I proceed?

    Thx,
    Aaron

    UPDATE:

So, I tried to "start from scratch" and uninstalled all the Ricoh-related devices in the CP. I then deleted all the associated INF and driver files. When Windoes rebooted I was back to having three "Base System Devices" with exclamation points - which is jusy what I wanted.

I then ran the Ricoh setup.exe from the original v1.0 Asus setup CD, and got this:

Why is it installing xD drivers???

I then realized that the RICOH folder on the Asus CD has three subdirectories:

    MMC
    MS
    XD

    What happened to SD?????

Where did you go to get your drivers? The S96J is actually a VBI notebook (VBI = Verified by Intel), so the best source is support.intel.com. Here's the link:
    Intel drivers for the S96J

The Ricoh drivers are at number 9 (Flash Media Controller Driver).

Personally I do not know if IBM's Ricoh drivers are 100% same in structure/file/version with Intel's, but I would assume IBM's drivers have now screwed up your XP's detection for the readers. Boot up in Safe Mode, uninstall all the reader drivers through the Device Manager, and install Intel's drivers.

EDIT: The SD drivers are part of the MMC drivers. SD/MMC are from the same technology (MMC is older). So don't worry if you don't see an SD folder.
