I have a 1.6 merom with 2 gigs of ram. Would i see any benifit going to a 2.0 merom cpu? Im talking genericly. Not specificly about running games or certain programs. Just all around

Also, is merom the only mobile cpu i can use in this system? I honestly have no idea what makes a merom a merom.

Pretty much yes. especially comes to heavy task in phothoping and convert videos and music.

You can get T7200 for your budget.

Don't mix up with T7100 7300 7500 cause they're for newer chipset mobo and different socket. weird thing is they're cheaper faster than their older brother.

Ok, its going to be confusing :(

How could i tell if a cpu is going to work in this system? For instance, T7250. Its 800mhz fsb. Does that mean it wont work since mine runs 667mhz fsb?

Ive built plenty, and upgraded plenty of desktops, but this notebook thing is a little confusing to me. Its my first :) Desktops were all socket type related, but it doesnt seem the same with mobile.

Yep that is correct! Make sure your processor is 667 FSB not 800FSB
Mobile is also socket related, they all fit, just the FSB thing you need to look out for. Just stick with these: T7200, T7400, T7600 and T7800 processors for your system.

btw, before you upgrade the processor. make sure to use Asus Update to flash your laptop with a new BIOS(for CPU support incase it doesn't have the later models)

I will say something that has not been said yet. You will not see any real life benefit to upgrading the CPU unless you do some of the following:
    1. Video encoding.
    2. Mathematical simulations.
    3. Heavy gaming (and only CERTAIN games are taxing the CPU to the max, for most the bottleneck is the GPU)

All-around, for 95% of the notebook users the CPU is spending most of its time at its minimum multiplier for more than 95% of the time.

So if you do not do any of these things, I think the CPU is no bottleneck for you. Therefore I suggest you save the money and get something which is more useful (e.g., RAM, external HDD, etc.)

if u have an ipod and converting mp4 videos or something similar or burning AVi files to DVD You will need 2.0ghz processor T7200 or T7400. Those are mainly application that will top the performance of the CPU.
