Hi,
I have had my S96J laptop for a little less than a month now, and so far I am loving it. However, today when typing on it my S key came lose, and fell off. I took a look at it, and found that it is connected to the keyboard by two little white peices of plastic. I also noticed that one of thoes peices of plastic was cracked. The key won't stay put anymore. I don't pound down on the keyboard very hard, and nothing dropped on it. The button will still type, however the plastic key part won't stay attached. I don't know if this problem would be covered by warrenty, and if it is I don't really want to send it away for such a small problem. Does anyone have any suggestions, or know where I could order a 5 cent plastic replacment peice?
As aways, thanks for your help.

You could buy a new keyboard since everything is replaceable and still under warranty.
-
That sucks..now I am reconsidering my choice for a s96j, especially with this incident and the graininess issue!

I had this happen to me as well. Unless your dealer happens to have a spare keyboard that's missing a key you will probably have to get a complete keyboard. I ended up getting a replacement from my dealer and installed the keyboard myself. From what I understand, the keyboards cost approx. $40. The installation for is a little tricky, but I can give you some tips on how to do so if needed.
-
If I do have to get a new keyboard I think I would still have to ship the whole unit back to them, which is really silly considering that only one tiny plastic part is broken.
-
just order a new keyboard, and install it yourself or send it to the dealer and let them do it.

Thanks! -
Popped off within the first week of usage, so I don't believe it was a fault of mine. I believe my dealer contacted ASI and they in turn sent out the keyboard to me. ASI is the distributor (I believe) for the S96J's which means your dealer should probably be able to get a hold of them...

Same thing happened to me as well, only my ']' key fell off. I can still pop it back into place so i won't be RMAing it any time soon. It happened in shipping or at the reseller factory because it came out a few minutes after i opened it up.
If you want it fixed, you will have to send the whole unit back to the reseller. They will remove the entire keyboard, put in a new one, and send the whole unit back to you. This is how my reseller said it would be done.
EDIT: Please be aware that the second paragraph is NOT TRUE. I was informed incorrectly. I can have a new key shipped to me or an entire keyboard shipped to me. -
wow seems like a pain in the backside!
-
It really is. The thing that gets me is that the only thing broke is a tiny piece of plastic. I hope I can just get one of those, or a new key. If not, I don't know what I am going to do, because even if it is covered by warranty, I will still have to pay the $35 for shipping to them.
-
you should talk to your reseller about this issue. the keyboard is not that difficult to replace, and you should be able to do it without sending it to the reseller. request that they just send you a new keyboard instead of sending your unit. it should be possible.

I knew this would happen, ever since i saw the pictures of the keyboard... ASUS had to cheapen up somewhere to get the price down to 600$ for the chassis.. And this is sort of a problem, because i have the tendency to press quite hard on my keys, especially while gaming and such.
Oh well, I just hope it doesn't happen to me when i get mine in August .. -

Key dont just fall off. They have to be removed banged or poped off. Well that is the accepted theory then again there may be exceptions

I did drop a small notebook on the keyboard about a week ago. It was softcover and didn't way very much, nor was it dropped from very high. Perhaps that damaged the key, and then normal use caused it to break. Still, the force on the keyboard wasn't very hard, and if that all it takes to break off a key then I am not very impressed with this keyboard. I'm not usually very hard on things, but I think in a laptop they should be made to take a little of bit of abuse, especailly since they do get bashed around a bit when people travel with them.

Please be aware of the edit to my post above. Thanks.

Where did you order yours from, SaferSephiroth? I sure hope I can order just a new key. If I can and they don't cost too much, I think I will order a few just so I have a few extras if this happens again.

Alright, well I contacted NCIX, and they told me that they don't provide support for the S96J, I would have to contact Asus about the problem. I did that, and after being on hold for 20 minutes my call was answered by and extremely rude agent who plain out refused to help me because the S96J is not supported by them. He told me to contact Intel with the problem. After spending a few hours try to get in contact with Intel I was told by them that they also didn't support the S96J, and sent me back to my reseller. NCIX, however, still refused to help in any way. Now I have a keyboard that is missing an S key, and I don't know what I can even do any more to fix it.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am extremely disappointed with NCIX's, and even Asus' tech support. -

Wow what a shame man. Thats nobodies fault. Asus did not lie. They are not responsible for the s96j. Its an intel product. Ncix is responsible. You really should have bought from milestone up in canada. Then again if you bought a barebone some vendors dont warranty barebones by them selves, We have a policy that says if you dont buy a cpu with your barebone we willoffer no warranty. Go to intel.com and look at their estore they do have the keyboard for it about 25$
-
The thing is, I bought all the pieces from them. I paid almost $1700 after tax and shipping. They're not getting a good review on resellerratings from me.
Oh, by the way where on Intel's site can you buy the keyboards? I wasn't able to find a place that would sell to consumers. Thanks! -
