    hey folks,

i've owned an asus s96j for the past 2 years and today the screen randomly turned black on me. After fiddling around, I realized that there's a big problem with the screen...it seems like it is burning out. By turning the brightness all the way down, I can get the screen to come back by closing and opening the lid or moving the lid around in general. On a moderate brightness, the screen lasts for a few seconds then starts to flicker (making a weird buzzing sound), then goes black. On high or full brightness, the screen lasts for less than a second.

Is this what happens when an LCD fails? Is there something I can do to fix it short of replacing the LCD, or will I have just pretty much have to get a new rig?

    Thanks
    FY

Question: do you see a (very dark/dim) image on the screen when the screen is 'black'?

In any case by your description it seems that the inverter is dying; either that or the inverter cable. If the answer to my question is yes, then it is almost certainly this problem.

For many models you can find inverters & cables on the ASUS eStore. For yours a quick search didn't reveal anything but maybe you can do better. http://estore.asus.com/shop/search.asp

The good news is that those parts are quite cheap. You'll get them both for under 40 USD (assuming you can find them)

Another option is to buy them from the ASUS service point in your country.

Guess you have no choice you have to cut off the back of your laptop screen with a circular saw, then point a 500w halogen spotlight directly at it and let the light shine thru to light up your screen.

I took the time to draw up a sketch for you so you would know if you have it setup right. It should look something like this:
