I removed the AC power from the notebook and a few moments later the computer shut off. Now I can't get it to power on. I've tried all combinations of power supplies (battery only, ac adapter only).. and nothing is working. A few days ago I updgraded to Windows Vista and the 1201 bios and everything was running perfectly until a few minutes ago... I also ran memtest after installing vista and the ram is fine.

I noticed that when I unplug the notebook from the ac adapter, the green light on the brick part of the adapter glows a solid bright green. Then when i plug it into the computer, it gets dimmer and flashes from dim to bright green constantly. Could it be a problem with a loose power connector on the motherboard or something like that?

    Any ideas? Suggestions?

    Nothing happens?

Is the AC adapter lit up?

The light on the ac adapter is lit, but it's pulsating from bright to dim. Nothing happens as in no signs of life. No lights flashing, no noise, nothing on the screen. Nothing.

    Try changing the AC adapter.

Was the battery empty when you unplugged it?

I am thinking that the AC adapter somehow broke and the battery had little or no charge so it is not booting up.

    or

Somehow there was a power surge of some sort and it fried your notebook. Did you have the AC adapter on a surge protector?

The battery was at 100% when I unplugged it, supposedly. I don't think I have any other compatible ac adapter, unless you know some common household item that would work. Yes, I was using a surge protector. Thanks for the help.

That is very weird, I can only imagine that somehow it shorted out the motherboard on the S96J, did you try hitting the reset button on the bottom of the notebook?

How about opening up the notebook and re-seating the RAM and HDD?

I did hit the reset button and held it down for a minute. Nothing happened. I re-seated the ram, but I'm not sure how to reseat the HDD and CPU. I have a feeling something happened with the CPU. I have no other explanation. The computer was working perfectly and this is definately an unexpected sudden tragedy...

Okey im sorry to say this but a few days ago i fried my seagate external HD because i made a mistake and plug the wrong adapter to it (it was a higher voltage) after that it shows the exact same thing as you describe. the device wont turn on again and the brick is bright green but when plugged into the device it goes dim and flashy...

now i know they are two different things but still the symptoms look alike, you may had a power surge that fried your laptop... is it still under warranty?? maybe you should have it checked

Try removing the HDD and see if it boots into the BIOS at all.

nope, nothing. I did notice that the cpu isn't completely in the locked position, and I can't move it completely into the locked position. Not sure if this even matters though.

When I first built my S96J, it wouldn't power on. I went in, reseated everything _including the processor_ and then it booted fine. Take the processor out, seat it properly and lock it in.
