    Yep, still looking for it.

Did anyone get theirs to work? Please enlighten me as dial up is the only connection I currently have at home!

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers a bunch of times and it still doesn't work. When I try connecting, I hear a dial tone for a few brief seconds but the modem doesn't actually dial the numbers. Then it stops and I get a message saying that there's no dial tone.

Please, I looking at the computer vendors, gentech or milestonepc, etc, help me please!

BTW, I've contacted milestonepc for support and got nothing yet, save the hackneyed suggestion of reinstalling drivers and windows.

Check the Intel site for drivers. I believe they explain a certain order you need to install them in in regards to the modem.

I went from DSL to dialup once and it was agonizing. Did it for over a year.

Thank you very much. I tried the hyperterminal diagnostic. It was unable to detect a tone. However, when i disable tone detection with AT&FX1 and then dial using AT DT it works fine! So now what? The site says:

If the modem will blind dial (x1), but not detect dial-tone otherwise, the problem is likely to be in the proper selection of the Country in Windows->ControlPanel->Telephony or in improper installation of the modem or lack of support for your country in the driver you are using. Check to see if there are updated drivers for your modem.

I'm in Canada and area code 416, so I don't think that's it. I've already reinstalled drivers ad nauseum.

Oh well, at least we're making progress :)

Is it possible that 10 digit dialing is screwing it up? Like it thinks it only has to dial 555-1234 instead of 416-555-1234?

I may be totally off base.

thanx, but I don't think so, since it never even tries to dial. I hear a dial tone but the **** thing says there's no dial tone :(

I also have mucho experience setting up dial-ups, so I don't think I would have made that mistake.

    MY MODEM FRICKIN WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, here's what you do, you double click that yellow modem icon in your systray then click on the settings tab. Click the modem properties button. Click on the modems tab, then click properties. click the modem tab and at the bottom, you should see "wait for dial tone before dialing." Uncheck that muthaf*cka, and there u go!

    (note the ridiculously convoluted steps)

so now it works, albeit rather poorly. It's really slow even for 56k. It took like a minute or more just to open up google! :p is the max bps for 56k modems 115200?

    thanx

Sorry for our late reply. We believe it is a setting problem. We tested with z96j's modem after a fresh Windows' installation and modem driver. A modem comes with from z96j is a Motorola SM56 Data Fax modem. A motorola SM56 Modem Helper can be found on a task bar. The following step can test and diagnose a modem...
    1) Double click the telephone icon on the task bar
    2) Motorola SM56 Modem Helper pop up and click the "Setting"
    3) Click the "Modem Properties"
    4) Click the "Properties" (You will see that modem is attached to COM3.)
    5) Click "Diagnostics"
    6) Click "Query Modem"
    7) A response will show up " Success"

You can also see the "View log" as well, and Max. port speed is up to 115200, but the phone line might be only up to or less than 56k.

After we use under a "Hyper Terminal" to dial up with our fax line for testing, it works without the error message you have.

    Cheers

    um, no

It said "success" and it didn't work. Not only that, you didn't suggest ANY changes to settings. You just told us how to run diagnostics. I think something's wrong with the modem (possibly just mine) and it can't detect dial tones. It can only blind dial.

Hmm~~ i recommend that you load a fresh windows and reinstall all the drivers one by one. Before you install all the application software, please try to test the modem, dial up it first and make sure it work. We did the same thing before after installing a new Windows with a Z96J. Everything work fine without any error message.

    Cheers

I guess my modem is faulty then. Is that covered in the warranty?
