S96J. The compal looks solid, but it got a 5.4/10 rating from cnet, and looks like laptop from 1997.

...Basing your whole rating system off of Cnet's isn't very good, much less responsible.

About a week ago I was choosing between these two and the HGL30. I've decided to choose the S96J (though I have yet to order it, will do it in the next couple of days) for several reasons.

    1) Probably the biggest reason would be the GPUs/vid cards. I'll be doing my share of gaming, and so the underclocked GPU in the HEL80 is really unwanted. 3DMark05 scores for the HEL80 are about 3k, versus 3.9k for the S96J. Even when you "overclock" (which really would make it neutral, wouldn't it?) the GeForce GO 7600, benchmarks are lower than the S96J's X1600. Personally, I wanted the GF, but not at that kind of expense.

    2) I plan on having this notebook for at least 4 years. I don't think I could stand looking at the HEL80 for four years, but I love the simple design of the S96J. I know this is in reality of no practical use...but hey, four years of constant use.

    3) The S96J is cheaper :p

If you're worried about giving up bluetooth, look at the Z96J. If you're worried about the smaller resolution (they both have the 1280x widescreen, HEL80 has an option for a larger matte screen), look at the Z96J. If you really want the fingerprint reader, go for the HEL80. If you want a higher battery life, the HEL80 has a 9 cell versus the S96J's 6 cell. But hey, what are extra batteries for, right? I emailed Ron from powernotebooks about a 9 cell for the S96J. He said while there have been rumors, there has yet to be one. Yet on btotech, they sell a 9 cell battery that fits the S96J...though it's not designed specifically ONLY for the S96J, guess it just happens to fit.

Uh...if I can think of more stuff I'll add more, but I think this is good for now.

Wait to see if the X1600 graininess issue is resolved. We should have an update this week from Intel. If so, then S96J for sure.

Fantastic screen, heatsink with lots of copper, it's freaking Asus.

They're both great systems. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses. You can't really go wrong either way.

The ASUS will give you better benchmarks.
