Well if you are talking about the A8JR and GPU ability, the A8JP offers a superior card especially with the X2300 only being a DX9 card which fooled many into believing it was DX10.

Newegg.com offers the A8JP for the same price as the A8JR I believe.

X2300 isn't better than the X1600 just cause it's newer. Remember it is the X2 300 and the X1 600 - the number in the hundreds place makes a bigger difference.

For example, an x600 is a better card (in older games that don't utilize the newer technologies) than x1300. But those games/apps that use the newer technolgies (pixel shaders, etc.) will perform better.

for today's games, at least, in most cases the X1600 > X2300j

the specs for the X2300 and X1600 should be more than adequate to convince you of this fact.

    Notably: (X2300)
105 million transistors using 90nm fabrication process
    4 pixel shader processors
    2 vertex shader processors

    (X1600)
157 million transistors on 90nm fabrication process
    Twelve pixel shader processors
    Five vertex shader processors

three times # pixel shader processors, and more than 2x vertex shader processors = better performance (plus more transistors)

better in terms of the GPU is the S96J

BUT, better in terms of your needs is a different story. If you want to use it primarily for gaming, go for the S96J or even the A8Jp, but if you just use it mainly for office tasks and light gaming, then the A8Jr is fine.

I didn't state that the x2300 was better, in fact I stated it was worse saying that it is only a DX9 card and not a DX10 card like everyone thought it was to be. The x1700 is a far superior card. I was referring to the A8JP not the A8JR. The A8JP offers the x1700. Sorry for the confusion. I should have stated I was throwing a whole new model into the mix, not just comparing the A8JR and the S96J. In fact the Z96J offers a better resolution and bluetooth. So I would say go for the Z96J which can be configured for even less than the A8JR and A8JP.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I thought newer is better. I know the S96J is the ugly duckling here. if only they made the S96J a better looking (just the look) notebook then maybe it's sold out by now. :)

Look at the Asus A8Jp, as someone else is suggesting here. Its the same price and size/weight as the A8Jr, plus it has a better GPU than the S96J.

Oh jeez sorry I misread that. P and R look quite close to the same. anyways yeah sorry about the mixup (although I see it did help with another person)

Yeah the x1700 is significantly better than the x2300 and margianlly better (a few hundred 3dmark06 points) than the x1600. I kinda read the post quickly and wanted to make sure that people knew that while the model (x2300) is newer, and may have some newer technologies in place, even the x1600 is better than the x2300 by a fair stretch. and of course yeah the x1700 beats both of them - anyways I digress (sorry bout the misread)

You can buy an A8JP off newegg.com for $50 more than an A8JR.

For the difference in specs (T7200, Radeon X1700 for A8JP), that $50 is MORE than worth it.

It's important to note the X2300 is NOT DX10 compatible - it's only DX9. Don't let ATI's new 2KX naming scheme confuse you. The X1700 is the superior card in every way.
