Is SPDIF on Asus laptops optical only, or will a 3.5mm to RCA coax connection work as well?

On the V1S/V2s, (and most of the other Asus laptops I would assume), they're dual use ports for either an optical out or 3.5mm audio jack out (like a headset). So I would guess your 3.5mm to RCA will work fine.

BTW, the V1S and V2s docking station has a separate dedicated optical out and 3.5mm audio out port, but on the laptops themselves there's only one dual use port.

It's optical only for SPDIF. His coax won't work.
