I don't want to order from GenTech because of the lower warranty, but they have a great price and I would love to buy one from them or PowerNotebook. Is the 3 year warranty worth it? Ill be going to college and my parents say I get to order by the time I start college, which really peeves me off. I start in August, will I be able to get a better computer by then or will the S96J still be the machine to choose? I would like to have Core 2 Duo availbility and I would also like to have a X1600/X1800 or equivilent. Any laptops releasing soon with those specs?
Thanks for all the replies

What do you mean lower warranty from Gentech? You can get the Extended 2 yr (total 3 years) ASUS Global warranty.

As for x1600 there are already a number of ASUS notebooks with this gpu W2&W3J for eg.

Also, call your credit card company and find out if they offer a free year extended warranty. One of mine does and I ordered mine with that.

I was in the same boat as you hamshu, but I finally thought about it and realized that even if you wait till the first day of college, you will still get pretty much the same notebook if you got it a month and a half earlier. I would say the only upside to ordering before college is that right now the S96j is so popular many dont have it in stock.

I wish I could order now,but my parents are strict and adament about it. The 2 yr warrarty is not a extension is it? I thought is start at the same time? I really need a new laptop soon, cause my Emachines just wont cut it with me...
I planned on either getting the Compal HEL80 or the S96J. But when I found out that I couldn't get instant on media player, then the extra cost wasnt worth it for biometrics and for 3 more cells. Any place that has the S96J in stock right now?
Thanks

The 2 yr warranty is an extension. The laptop comes with a 1 yr warranty. If you buy the additional 2 yrs, you get a total of three years of coverage.

It is very help to extend extra 2 yrs. No one guarantee when the laptop's problem come out. Another 2 yrs let the laptop can last a longer time life.

The ASUS warranty does not apply to the S96J at all. It is a Verified by Intel (VBI) laptop that carries a 2 year warranty from your dealer, supported by Intel, not ASUS, and it is on the shell only. See the full explanation of the VBI warranty
Even if you were buying an ASUS Ensemble laptop the Global warranty is only for one year. Then you can buy an extended ASUS warranty, but that is not Global, it is only good in the US. That is, you have to return it to ASUS in the US for warranty repair.
When you are buying a VBI laptop like the S96J, the user relies on the dealer for the warranty. The dealer, not the user, relies on the Intel warranty. ASUS has nothing to do with a VBI (S96J) warranty. -

I think a 3 year warranty is worth it - esp since u will be moving around with it a lot, you want peace of mind that u will have the laptop for 3 years barring any accidents.
Consider the Z96j to be released soon - it has a higher resolution screen -

Donald, whats the deal with accidents and warranties ? Say I'm typing on my laptop in class, a girl yakking on a cell phone comes, her handbag catches on the laptop, and the laptop falls to the ground.
Or say I spill coffee all over the keyboard.
Does powernotebooks take care of repairs for these accidents or does the warranty only include "no user fault failures" ? -

The PowerPro warranty does not cover accidental damage.
However we do offer Accidental Damage Protection as an option for any Crown laptop.
