I bought my Asus G1s on ebay roughly a year ago. The laptop itself was in near perfect condition and had no problems whatsoever. After several months of using the laptop I had accumulated vast amounts of crap that I didn't need on my computer and instead of finding everything that was on there that I didn't need I just did a clean install after backing up all my data. I was running Vista (not sure which version) so I just reinstalled it. A few weeks later I connected my 360 to my laptop via ethernet and bridged the connection. Within an hour I got the blue screen of death and my laptop shut down and restarted itself. This would happen every time I bridged my connection and then within a week after it would start happening without a bridged connection. I was forced to either reinstall Vista or upgrade to 7. I chose 7. 7 worked fine on my laptop but after a few weeks my computer would have moments where it would pause to think. After the first few times it would lengthen until I would have to shut off the computer (holding the power button down) and restart in order to do anything. This happened at random times and for random reasons, such as playing music on media player or just moving the mouse. Now I am at my current problem, my screen will not turn on. I opened it one day and turned the computer on only to find that the screen stayed blank. I know the bios booted up because the bios start up sound plays right after I turn on the computer.

I have tried hooking up a monitor to the outside port but no luck. I tried using the HDMI port and hooking it up to my friend's tv but no luck either. I took out the ram and tried starting it (both and individually) and got the same blank screen or nothing. I tried starting it without the battery and just the power cord, same thing. I tried resetting the bios by having no power to the laptop and holding the power button for 30 seconds but no luck. I even tried holding down the manual reset button, next to the battery,....nothing.

I am out of ideas....please help if you can think of anything that might work. My laptop is practically my life and I don't have the money to get a new one so any help is welcome.

The graphics card is going out, and there's not much you can do about it short of a motherboard replacement.

It seems you've tried everything I would have tried, if the BIOS reset didn't do it that is not looking good, if you can't get VGA out from it when it turns on that is bad. It sounds like your graphics card might be dead :(

would it cost more to replace the motherboard or would it be simpler to just get a new laptop? my friend said it was possibly the motherboard since the graphics card is integrated.

A new motherboard for the G1S would cost a pretty penny. Just invest in a new notebook. Sh*t like this happens and I'm sorry to hear that it happened to you. However, on the bright side, your hard drive is still intact.

It depends... if you can happen to find an 8600M GT in a G1S being sold for parts for example, that wouldn't require swapping the mobo.

When ASUS replaces G1S mobos they tend to come back with the 9500M GT and a G1Sn motherboard which is a higher rev. The 9500M GT will not work in the original G1S motherboard so in that case it would need a new mobo as well.

I'm not sure if you'll want to send it in to ASUS, since it might be out of warranty. Your best bet might be to try and find a G1S for parts (that still has a working GPU) and swap it out.

I'm pretty sure the graphics card on the G series is soldered on.

Asus doesn't replace the G1S mobo. They just keep your laptop for 2 and a half months until you yell at them.

i cant seem to find any that are being sold for parts so.....i think i might just sell mine for parts and use the money towards getting a new laptop. That's if i can get some spare money to spend on another computer. Thanks for the help

Ok, i just read this on another post but it seemed kinda important.

"About 9 weeks ago my G1S laptop finally died. I had been having a problem with the screen and graphics card for a few months and one day i finally couldnt get the screen to boot up. I understand after research that it is an overheating problem with the generation of graphics cards in the laptop and that in the end. all G1S series will fail."

so pretty much my laptop was bound to die, the question being WHEN? and the answer being NOW....

Yes, unfortunately that's pretty much correct, there's a bunch of links here that have some background info about the NVIDIA 8-series problems if you're interested. It's quite a lengthy read though. Long story short it's an engineering problem that NVIDIA seems to have pretty much swept under the rug. There are a few class action suits that were getting started, I haven't checked on them in a while.
