Has anyone noticed screen garble on their ASUS?![]()
The screen garbles or freezes for a second then is back to normal. I saw it happen on two different V6JsI'm wondering whether it is a driver or a hardware issue.
-
Are the video drivers updated? That doesn't sound normal on any notebook...
-
Given that I've only ever seen the W5 in person, I haven't seen that behavior in an ASUS before.
However, I have seen it in my Dell before. I have good reason to believe it had something to do with heat issues, because the Inspiron 5100 (which I have) is flawed in design and overheats by nature unless you tell the fan to run high all the time. Cooling fins on the cpu heat sink clog with dust.
Could you maybe describe the situation where it's occurring and what it looks like when it does occur? Might be able to shed some more light with more info. -
GAK!
That looks awfully like my infamous "freeze-garble-black screen-restore" bug. Only thing is our notebooks are unrelated, and I have yet to find a solution. -

Seb,
I have had my V6j for a week and a half and have never noticed that. Can you force it to happen, or is it completely random in occurance? -
Garbles as in screen flickers or garbles as in a whole bunch of multi colored squares and rectangles on the screen?
This happens sometimes due to refresh rate change going from a 3d screen to your 2d desktop.
This also can occur sometimes when changing modes in Powerplay, when on battery.
Also could be a bad driver installation.
Can you pinpoint when it started happening? -
Happens to my Z63A from time to time...
It used to happen more often, but recently, it's been fine. I haven't really changed anything... except for one stick of RAM, but I think it's unrelated... -
Portion of screen freezes with black lines.
Aurora, did you update your gpu drivers lately?
CalebSchmerge, its completely random.
Don't think its a heat issue. I just got the garbling/Freezing and the GPU is only 47C -
So it happens at random and not at bootup or shutdown; specific times?
Since your system is new it could just be because your system hasn't been burned in yet.
Usually when a system is new or you install a new ram module or especially a cpu, there's a burn in time of about a couple weeks or 100-200 hours or so.
I like to burn in cpus for about 2 weeks or a week and a half.
This it to get the new unit used to the voltage it's getting and for the thermal compound to, what's the word again?, get worked in? LOL, sorry I forget the word, but for the thermal compound to fully get into it's optimal state after several heat ups and cool downs.
How long have you had your new replacement V6 again? -
2 weeks.
Its really random <<;
Yvonne is playing tricks on me oO;
She's very jealous and she just found out i was eyeing the W7J -.-;
Now she's *****ing x_X -
LOL Seb.
Stop cheating on her and just baby her for a few more days to see if the problem continues.
Are you doing anything to her like voltage tricks or anything out of the norm?
If so try raising the voltage back up to stock levels for a while before lowering them again.
If you're not, try reinstalling your video drivers again or reinstalling windows if the problem persists for the next week.
Oh yeah try to keep track of when it happens, off battery power only, during bootup, during shutdown, during certain tasks, etc.
You know the drill.
Cheers and keep us updated,
Mike -
No dirty voltage tricks honest 0
I'll try the driver upgrade -
Have you tried checking the refresh rate of your LCD screen? It might be set too high / too low.
Does it occur when you have the power supply plugged in?
Does it occur when its not plugged in?
It could be a faulty AC adapter
Did it always happen, or just recently (I know you have a new comp, but to the best of your knowledge, was the problem always there?) -
Could be software related. Ive seen stuff like that were the scree goes wacky for a minute. try different drivers. even old ones if there arent any new just to see if it goes away. but if its happening when changing from 3d to 2d and not just on reg usage i think its software.
-
Yeah software can be a [edited out by AuroraS].
Wish software developers could get together with others and collaborate.
I know, impossible.
I'm very confident it's not a hardware problem or anything to worry about Seb, rest assured.
Trusssssssssssssst me -
It happens with or without the adapter. So its not faulty a/c adapter
Refresh rate for LCD is 60 -
Thats funny.. I just had something similar happen last week with my W3V. The computer will always slow down or freeze.. then show a blurred fragmented screen then reset it self. Once I actually caught the blue screen and it has to do with some atidxag.dll file causing infinite loop problem. I downloaded some new omega drivers and installed those. Havent happened yet.
Although I do kind of suspect that it maybe an over heating issue too... -
Did your blurred screen have black stripes?
-
coilz, great info, I think you're dead on with that.
Problem with a lot of these screen farts is that there isn't an error message usually unless the thing crashes completely and even then it just resets so quick you can't see the message unless you set it in the system properties to NOT reset automatically, so you can see the error message.
Sometimes software just messes up on its own even though you installed it correctly. I once installed windows FRESH, but I went out to eat during the install and when I came back it was waiting for me to click okay on something. So I did and continued the installation, but the whole start menu and taskbar was messed up. Why? I have no idea.
I did another quick fresh install and everything was fine.
So freakin' weird software is. I guess complex systems just have a personality of their own.
GHOST IN THE MACHINE. -
the blurred screen had stripes.. blurred mouse trail, eveything. It was as if it was a bad video card Overclock...
Also.. the problem seem to only show up when I am on the AC power. -
coilz... indeed, the problem you describe sounds more like an overheating issue.
If it only happens on AC power... then it probably has something to do with too much heat or electrical interference of some sort. -
Yeah something is up with that... happens when I am just typing on word though. I should see if it freezes up when I am playing a game, that'll probably put that theory to rest.
-
Any idea what your temps are under these circumstances and in general?
-
That's the funny thing about this type of problem, it's hard to pinpoint to driver or hardware overheating.
I had this happen a couple times at random on my Z70Va when I first got it, but everything is okay now I guess, since it hasn't happened for quite some time now, but that doesn't mean it won't again.
Notebooks are just grumpy. Rawr. -
Slight asides for info only (don't want to bump an old thread)
I previously started a thread about some screen distortion on boot-up and shut down on my new W3v.
It was a total non-issue.
Went to the store and the salesman showed 4 laptops and and all do that.
on the WELCOME screen...Ooops...
-
I keep my W3V at 800mhz using CHC most of the time.. So temp is usually 50C ish ... the Harddrive however doest get quite warm.
