Can you fit 2 documents side by side comfortably? Like Firefox and Word? Or are you going to be pressed to fit two separate docs side by side

Ahh I found my answer via search. Seems 1 + 1/4 seems reasonable. I am used to 1600X1050 WSXGA+

Think the change will be drastic?

Going from WXGA to WSXGA is quite a change, I would assume.

1280x800 vs 1680x1050, theres alot of real estate. If you go SXGA or more, I would think it would be hard to go back.

Hmm I think it won't be THAT hard but of course it won't be easy - I had a 1920x1200 screen, now I have 1280x768. At the begining it was a little weird, but now it's gettin normal.

This more or less seems to be the deal-breaker for me. I was so used to the SXGA on my old lappy and thus the WXGA on the W3J is going to be very VERY hard to get used to. Otherwise, the W3J is almost perfect for me.

LCD's have fixed native resolutions. They can't physically display anything higher than native, and lower resolutions are shown through interpolation that makes things blurry. You can't get a higher res without getting a new LCD.

uhm, here's a picture of my Monitor displaying 2 different resolution

    THe first is 1280x1024
    [IMG]

the second is 1600x1200 which shows how much extra real estate i would get if i increased the resolution.

    Hope this helps.

Sigh, that seems to be a sizable amount of real-estate. And compared to the top pic you posted Mystic, the W3J will be even boxier (1280x768)

I'm gonna have to go look at some other 14" with the same resolution. Anyone know any? HP has some 14" as does some compaqs if i recall (although they are the same now? lol)

Its kinda hard to judge just by screen caps. Also depends because 1600 x 1200 is alot different on a 15in screen than a 20. but the best thing you can do is go to best buy or something and look at a 14in laptop. I find it comforable to look at. but as far as screen realestate its def lacking. you really can only work on one document at a time period.

yah i forgot to mention that SRD your right tho, im on a 17" Flat Screent CRT LOL.

hmm, as you said its best to check it out in real life =\.

Its kinda hard to give you what it feels like making the change unless someone can actually takes pics of the difference, well that person hasta have 2 lappies.

but best to check it out in the the stores.

Tay, take into account the physical screen size.

I'm working on a 20" dell LCD and the res is 1680 x 1050, and that's appropriate for a 20" screen. With a 14" screen WSXGA is going to be too small, and I found 1280 x 768 to be a pretty reasonable resolution for a 14" screen. The jump between resolutions was not overly drastic because the screen resolutions accomodated the physical size.

My dead Fujitsu E7010 had 1400x1050 resolution on a 14" screen and I prefer that to the 1024x768 that I'm stuck with on my 17" CRT monitor with my PC. I kinda miss having all that screen space.

The thing I really dislike about the W3J is that the screen panel starts way up high within the enclosure. I much prefer when the screen takes up the whole panel like in a Powerbook or the Asus V6J. This is a problem with the W5 as well and probably a bunch of other Asus notebooks. It just makes it look cheap, like an old Dell or something with the economy screen.

Not sure if it's been said, but wouldn't just taking a standard 15" screen and chopping off approx. and inch off of the top give you a good indication of dual windows on a 14"?

I know resolutions are the variable here but from a physical dimensions standpoint?

hmm, i know what your saying klezmer41, but i will havta somewhat disagree.

The material used can factor in how big the bezel would havta be for the screen to fit in. Yes we all hate big bezels, which constitutes to a laptop having a bigger footprint and increased weight.

However you need to know what's inside the bezel to make it bigger. I know that some wiring is in there, like the bluetooth, and WiFi run inside the bezel.

Now when you look at cams too, the wiring would also have run throuh the bezel.

Then you would hafta look at structural intregrity, im not sure, but with a slightly bigger bezel there may be a lower chance of screen failure after a drop, but also consider the material used. High grad plastic, low grade plastic, different forms of aluminum or carbon fibre alloy, or other alloys.

The footprint of the laptop is also judge by the base of the machine too, so ports and the structural design of the base would constitute for a bigger footprint, which the laptop designer needs to put a bigger bezel around the screen to the laptop is flush when it closes.

Those are some of the reasons why the screen has a smaller or bigger bezel around it.

I personaly think 1 cm should be the proper bezel size all around except for the bottum because of the hinges. Other than that, any bigger, in my opinion would be a waste, that make the laptop bigger, heavier and uglier.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

That's the thing, if you make a 14" notebook then put it in a 14" case rather than have the top and bottom eaten up by plastic!

If Apple can do it right why can't Asus? I REALLY want to buy an Asus but I just don't want a smallish screen like the W3J on such a big panel. The V6J is tempting but I do want the faster video card. Such a dilemma...

The w3j really doesnt have a big panel. If thats the only reason you are hesitating to get it, thats kinda dumb. its a nice looking machine. and for apple doing it yes it can be done and asus does make apples. But its just a different design i have never heard of anyone says the w3 series looks cheap. and the reason the apple and the v6j can do it is because of the hinge design which is totally different than most notebooks.

klezmer, take a ibook that's is similar to the W3J and compare all aspects of dimension and weight. If the W3J comes close then you know you won't have problems with the W3J.

I will definately agree, that yes having a bigger bezel is not the best, but you must also understand ASUS is still new to the laptop industry, and you can see how many laptops their pumping out this year.

The ASUS W3J is definately a MASTERPIECE when compared to all notebooks in it class. Hence that's why everyone is buying it. (I would too)

I will agree that apple designers on all of their notebooks are close to perfect, the amount of bezel around the screen is perfect, the footprints are smaller, the weight is less than the average machine in its class. the list goes on...

But there are things that apple does not have right, like pricing, lack of windows support, yes boot camp now works with MBP 15.4" and 17" and the new 13.3". There is such a low amount of variety in apple notebooks, they all look the same..lol, which is still a sleek and sexy look. And to a certain degree offer somewhat less ports to and less gpu performance. And you know the reasons behind that.

So if your deciding on what notebook to go for, plz tell me your options.

We know so far its the ASUS W3J, V6J, and possibly the MBP?
Also what do you plan on using it for? School/Gaming?

Many here have taken the plunge in getting a 14" screen so the W3J is perfect for travel. The footprint is good, compared to all other brands. It offers the most performance in its class. yes there are other 14" with X1600.

So all in all the W3J is a real winner. Now if you have doubts just because of the bezel, that's fine, i suggest you wait and see it in REAL LIFE, and then judge it again. Or jump on the pre-order bandwagon and get it first.

If you got time on your hands to choose a notebook by all means wait. Many are doing that too, I know I am.

PS: The W3J is the most sexiest laptop of 2006!!! with awsome performance and decent price. Can't beat that :D LOL

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Mystic i agree with most things you say, But asus is not new to notebooks. They maybe new to their own line but they have been making them for other companys for years.

Sorry mate, but this sounds like a joke. This laptop is the best 14" laptop on market with powerful CPU and GPU, with fantastic built quality and you're saying it's sucks cause panel starts too high?? Give me a brake. Don't you have more important worries?? You don't see all the advantages but see LITTLE ONE as "bad" screen. Cheap look?? Thanks, I like to laugh before going to bed.

i think you will be fine fitting 2 pages of text on the screen at the same time. it might be a tad small. but not something you cant live with.

You cannot fit two pages of text on the w3j. It has nothing to do with being small it just wont fit the rez is to low. remember it as wide as a 15in xga screen and id like to see you open 2 pages of text in that. it would be 2 half windows.

Hey MysticGolem, I'm really not sure now what notebook I'd like to get. I like Asus the most but I'm just not in love with any of their current designs. The W3V is pretty much out of the question because I think it's really ugly the size of the screen compared to the bezel. Of them I would consider the V6J the most, but I would like a x1600 256MB card. If that V6J came with a x1600 I'd throw down my money. I do have a gaming desktop so a good video card is not mandatory. I've tended to dislike most other notebooks vendors because the build quality is ****, but if I decide to just go with a portable and reliable machine I would really consider the IBM/Lenovo T43. Oh did I mention yet that I'm picky?

Wait for the V1j then...X1600, looks fairly similar to the v6j (without the brushed aluminum palm rests) - 15.4" widescreen.

I'd have to agree, FWIW. The V1J will be the one to get if you can wait, assuming the screen res is good... if I didn't need a machine now I'd be waiting for it.

Is there a preorder list for it yet? :)

No you cannot swap the 7400 in a V6J for an X1600 256 Meg.
