Are you serious?
I took off all the crap on the heat-sink that hardly does anything put some as5 on the video card heat-sink and now my idle temps are 85C. Any idea on i did wrong? I did fine with installing the t9600. Its idling at 31C overclocked to 3.1ghz.
-
putting too much or not enough will make your temps go up. you only need a pea-sized ammount
-
-
It seems very very unusual for a T9600 to be idling a 31C especially when overclocked that much. Are you absolutely positive that those are the temps?
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
The G5/7 series is not designed to run cool under load or stress regardless of what you put into it for thermal transfers, it's inherent in the design and engineering. Still, 85 idle seems like you didn't get the application right.
And, by the way, for anyone else considering this approach... G8's warranty with Asus is now void. -

Groan inducing topic is groan inducing.

Speaking of warranties, where exactly is the seal?
G8, what did you do with the thermal pad? -
-
Thermal pad is gone... Becareful taking it off. Its stuck on there pretty good. Use a blow dryer to warm up the heatsink pipe and it should just peel right off. -

Hmm. Is there any way for them to tell if the sticker has been unstuck? I lifted it off the screw and took it out normally. After I was done I replaced the screw and stuck it back down. Form what I remember the part of he sticker that was directly over the screw was not stuck down.
As for the thermal pad, I kept it on and there are no problems with my GPU. I didn't look too closey, but is the interface flush with the vidcard? If there's too much space that would be a problem. -
-
i mean this is pathetic. The heatsink pipe is obviously transferring heat. you can feel it get roasting hot. So it has to be sitting flush.
And before any asks... yes the fan in plugged in LOL. -

Then something was botched in the process. Try again, maybe. Good thing I opted not to remove my own thermal pad.
-
-
The CPU is held in place with numbered screws take them off in that order and reverse the process when re-installing.
-

Any reason for that? I did them willy-nilly and no problems so far.
-
-
Well looks like im screwed. I have no idea what happen. Ive been building for computers for 9 years now. Bout to throw the thing out.

"That's what she said."

aren't thermal pads usually meant to fill a larger space between the die and the heatsink? Say, a couple of millimeters. And if so, isn't it highly inefficient to try filling that large a gap with thermal paste (which relies on very close contact between die and heatsink)? -

o and for the record, i bought another one, this one idles around 75c and no i havent messed around with it. Just setup and installed hardware monitor. -
It is extremely doubtful given that there has no one reporting temperatures that high as of yet. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
I'm confused with the pronouns. G8, you bought another what?
-
Forge, i bought another g51. Which i might take back and step away from the asus lineup. -

The thing is that no one else has those temperatures doing what you're doing. Which means your computer is outside the norm... and worse off for it. You just have the bad luck of getting a lemon.
Of course, I'm operating under the assumption that your first G51 worked perfectly until you removed the heatpad. If if didn't, it means you had the incredibly bad luck of getting two lemons in a row.
I could understand you being annoyed with Asus right now... but seeing as how us other G51 owners don't have issues, you shouldn't be so fast to write off the brand just yet. -
Ok well just to give me an idea what is everyone idle temps with stock clocks on the gpu?
-
my completely stock gpu gets to 84 in 3dmark06, playing COD4 i get 87. Only 1 time I've seen my gpu get to 90, and it was playing COD4, with my cpu overclocked, and my room temperature was 35-40 degrees Celsius.
at idle I don't get more than 55 degrees on my gpu most of the time i get 49 degrees.
hope it helps -

I never measured idle--I went immediately for DOX drivers as soon as I got my internet and programs configured--but at stock drivers I peaked at 83C running a 3DMark06 trial at 1280x720.
Note that I was on top of a deactivated plastic Targus cooler at the time.
While downloading with the screen closed and the cooler active for about four hours, my max GPU temperature reached 50. This is with Dox 185.85. -
My laptop is running overclocked and undervolted (look at sig)
After playing intensive games for several hours (5+, Fallout 3 Ultra-High) I get 65-67C max on CPU and usually 89C max on GPU. Idle temps, not positive about them, but I believe they are both in the low 50s (Celsius) -
You could attempt a copper sheet mod to replace the thermal pad. Use this thread for reference:

I have this card sitting at 605/1005/1524 Stable at 93C while running L4D Everything max, 16xAA the works. Maybe not a lemon after all. T9600 running at 3.1ghz 54C under full load. Looks like i got a keeper now. -

Well, maybe the AA is realy important, because I crested at 80C at full resulution, max settings, and 2x AA. I was on an active cooler.
Screw the G51 Help.
