    Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade the sluggish 4200rpm 120gb fujitsu in my V6J. Should i go for the newer perpendicular tech drive or the faster one?

    Seagate 5400.3 160gb or 7200.1 100gb?

Hey Mastha, how much did that 5400.3 HD cost you? I'm assuming it's pretty expensive right now. Also, how long does it usually take for the price to decrease?

No, here in the USA (from PROportable.com) the specs for the drive is 5400 RPM and mine seems pretty speedy. I run video editing/photo editing software as well as games like Doom 3. While it is NOT a gaming machine it can hold it's own but what I really like about it is the sturdy case and the screen!!

    Hope that helps.

I have the newest Hitachi 7200 RPM in my computer. It gets warm at times, but I have never really had trouble with it. If the seagates were quieter and cooler though, I would go with that 100%.

I think that Hitachi I had was louder than Seagate.

I've used Hitachi, Maxtor, Western Digital, and Seagate HDs... From personal experience, I found Seagate HDs to be the most silent.

Just a quick side note, the 5400.3 series drives are Seagate's first perpendicular recording drives. The data is stored at a higher density on the platters compared to the 7200.1 series. A direct comparison based on RPM is not valid. With a higher data density you get higher data throughput at the same rotational speed. The 7200.1 series is probably still faster, but not by as much as most people think.

I posted screen from HD Tune with 5400.3 and 7200. 7,2k is only slighty faster than 5400.3, really great HDD IMO and very quiet.

Yea, on mastha's benchmarks above.. it shows the 7200 over the 5400 by a small difference. I need to get me one of those! :)

Can you give a better temperature and sound comparison of the two drives? I know that I at times prefer my slower 5400 RPM drives because they run cooler and quieter. How about this one?

Sound comparison will be quite difficult cause I don't have right gear to measure it but I will try to get some temp benches asap. I have it just couple of days but I can tell you that it is really quiet, previous Hitachi 4200 was louder.
