Has anyone actually gotten a second hard drive into their best buy model yet? I have heard and seen that its missing the mounting bracket, and would like to sooner or later throw a second hard drive in my g71, and was hoping for an official g71 series mounting bracket to popup on asus' store.... <_<
anyway, yea, has anyone been able to do it yet?

(and side note, has anyone pushed the g71gx past the 6 gigs of installed ram)
    thanks guys.

    Hope you don't mind a G51 owner's info.

Anyway, there isn't a need for a mounting bracket. The foam pads that come inside work like a charm. You might run into problems if you're playing punt the laptop while copying files, but otherwise I've had no problems with my WD drive.

Nice idea, I am looking from one also, but the G71 that I got did not have any, I will have to dig around and see if I can find some to use. Does it full the whole bay or is it just a small pad of foam?

Seems pretty dangerous to not mount the hard drive properly without a bracket.

Nope. I just use the stock HDD for OS, system files, and work programs. The second drive is dedicated entirely to movies, music, and games.

While I would agree it is not optimal to mount one without a bracket, I would think that using a SSD (devoid of moving parts) as opposed to an HDD would be ok as it is not be subject to the problems that an HDD with moving parts might have if not secured properly.

I just installed a 2nd HDD, formatting it right now, and it's not unsafe at all to leave it without brackets, because it's sit in very, very tightly. So tight that you feel the resistance while screwing the cover back on.

    Working fine for me.

i would actually not mind picking up a cheap bracket either, if it's available.

........ if it worked fine for you, why buy a bracket?

i guess to be over protective, and also both drives would look the same if I had another bracket.. you know, little stuff..

ok i opened it up, turns out it wouldnt work out...
the toshiba design was really modular, everything popped out, connected to the bottom with it. So their bay was like a box, that just pops out of the bottom with the drive, and doesnt have top mounting screws that would bend at right angles to be connected to the g71 body. on a side note, the ram was labled pc6400, 666

not 800. nothings underclocked by the bios, its just that slow ram. can it handle the 800 speeds in it? and along with that can it go 12 gigs!? (been searching for that answer for a while, but it seems no ones done it, or whoever have isnt willing to share the results.)

the bracket from the g51 does look like it would fit that mounting pattern in the g71. how long does stuff from asus' store usually take shipping to the US?

also, u guys think this would be an ok hard drive to go with that bracket? what about it voiding the Best buy 1 year warranty?

There isn't any stickers on the screws that says warranty is voided if open. So I think you're ok.
