This is a slightly edited message I sent to Asus via the "Escalation Mail Box" listed on their "Contact Us" page on Tuesday, April 10th (I think that this may not be the correct place to send such a message, since I've received no response, but I can't find any more-useful channels). The short version is that I've sent my Asus K53TA in for repairs under warranty three times (and now a fourth), and it has come back in worse condition each time (well, with the exception of the most recent time, when it came back in exactly the same condition). I don't expect any of you to read the entire message, but you can get the gist of it by skimming:
My main concern right now is getting my laptop back in proper condition, and I'm just not sure what to do at this point. Is there anything I can do to get them to exchange the laptop for another one completely? Even if I were to receive a refurbished unit of the same model, I'd be completely happy so long as everything worked properly.
Honestly, this is the worst experience I've ever had with a laptop or with a laptop manufacturer.
Any advice is truly appreciated. Even if someone can just point me to a few useful channels through which I can reach helpful reps, that would be extremely helpful.

I'll be blunt. no offense intended.
1. you don't need to write an essay to customer service. concise, Bullet points are ideal. I don't think anyone wants to read all that, especially about your life story. I have received responses from asus cs, and they are usually from lowly paid chinese girls in taiwan or something. short and sweet is key.
2. with budget laptops, you have to have some level of tolerance for imperfections, and this laptop has quite a few...... cheap plastic, warped touchpad clickers, flimsy keys..... but I didn't buy a macbook pro, so it's ok.
i think your complaints are bordering on whiner status.
You're talking about "feeling"... mushiness, squeaks and rattles. Pop out the kb, and squirt a little wd-40. (I used to have a core i3 hp laptop with a squeaky space bar. solved it with a little vaseline.)
In this budget category, if it works, be happy with it.
It sounds like everything works, but you're unhappy with cosmetic stuff.
All <$450 laptops are built like crap.
This laptop will not stand up to rough handling. Your gf needs to understand this too.
You don't have to force the a/c plug into the hole. Light pressure will seat it just fine. If I remember correctly from disassembling the laptop, the port is secured in the plastic case, not soldered on the mobo.
again, delicate handling is key.
Some people like that chiclet keyboard you got. The kb that comes with this laptop is actually cheaper quality. Took me a while to get used to it, as it will take you a while to get used to the chiclet keys.
If you have kb flex, pop out the kb and use some double sided tape on the back side.
At this point, if you want the old cheap kb back, call asus tech support and explain that you got a different kb, and request that they send you the original kb that came with the laptop. I don't think they'll mind.
It is user replaceable and snaps in in a minute.
stop sending your laptop back. It will only make you more unhappy.
oh, and that whining noise on your gf's laptop is cpu whine or mobo whine. It's common in laptops, both intel and amd. -

With regard to the keyboard, my point is that I'm not happy with the new one, and it is in fact of much lower quality than the one that originally shipped with the device--which was one of the selling points of the device for me in the first place. I can see why you might think that's nitpicking, but you should understand that that is your opinion. Bottom line: I paid for something else--plain and simple. Normally, I'd just pick a keyboard up on eBay because it should simply snap right in (normally not a problem), but since it was covered under warranty, I decided not to waste money. The one they replaced it with has its own thicker bezel though, and I don't think that I can swap it out myself as easily as one that I'm familiar with--that, and I don't want to give them an excuse to void my warranty.
Opinions aside, they literally broke the touchpad buttons altogether, which I suspect relates to the fact that they used a non-standard keyboard. That's not something I should have to just "live with".
And as for my girlfriend's machine, it has nothing to do with abuse. The screen seems to be failing toward the bottom of the panel. And no, I shouldn't have to just live with imperfections. Unless they include them on the spec sheet, that idea is ridiculous. A DC jack which loosens and fails periodically is a design flaw, not an issue of "forcing it in too hard". All of my other machines have lasted longer than this by far--and I have friends that are still using "low-end" x-series IBM ThinkPads from maybe six or eight years ago which, even today, are in better shape than the K53TA even came in. Maybe you're content with electronics which break down six months after use--maybe you're Asus's ideal consumer, a serial buyer--but I'm not. -
I can understand you got a different keyboard , but at a "functional" point of view, they had fix it. Unless it does't register your press, I can't find a reason they will replace it.
For the touchpad, I can feel your pain, but it all depends all the technician who is "repairing it". Using the Escalation Mail Box may help, but you must acknowledge their response is from Taiwan I believe. And it takes forever.
You have the right to send it in for warranty, but they also have the right to put it back to the "functional" state on their standard. -
i would suggest instead of of going to bestbuy, just call tech support and demand that you ship the unit in yourself and tell them to pay for the shipping as your notebook should have two way shipping. as a previous user have mentioned, make it short. just give them a detailed list of what was replaced in the past, tell them you think this unit is not repairable and demand a replacement. even though its a refurb, it cant be worse than sending in your unit all the time
Sent in for warranty repair three times--came back worse every time. Not sure what to do...
