I'm thinking of going for an A8J maybe some of you here can fill in the blanks for me. In my country there are 3 A8J models:

    A8JS-4S020P 1660€ (Geforce 7700)
    A8JP-4S020P 1752€ (x1700)
    A8JR-4S026C 1899€ (x2300)

(One other lappy I have in mind is the Toshiba M100-233 link)

From what I can tell the A8J notebooks have the same configuration except for the graphics card. (C2D T7200, 2GB of RAM, 1440x900 screen, etc)

For a non-gamer that would appreciate the better battery times, a stable, cool and quiet running lappy, which one would be the better choice? Any issues with fan noise? (I'm used to a Toshiba M70 where the fan runs virtually quiet)

Any annoying, driver or other major issues I should concern myself with? I don't want to end up with a lesser notebook in this respect.

I've read a few topics about screens having a yet unresolved graininess issue? Would that be a deal breaker and does it affect the whole A8J range?

Is the trackpad any good? Can the corners of the trackpad be configured? Similar to what Toshiba notebooks do where you can configure the corners to right-click, back, foward, etc. Can you scroll horizontally?

What's screen quality like compared to brands like Toshiba, Sony, etc?

Lastly I've read people where mentioning AUO and CMO screens? Is that the screen brand? What's the difference between the two?

To sum it up my main concerns are about stability, quality, fan noise, and battery times.

The A8JR doesn't have a t7200 or a WXGA+, I'm pretty sure. Also, the x2300 is maybe half as powerful as the x1700 or the 7700 (if that).

Here the A8JR-4S026C does. I doubt shops around here would list a wrong spec for such an expensive notebook.

OK. I'm wondering why Asus is making the A8JR, with the same spec, the more expensive A8J, at least around here.
