    Hello,

I got my new G50VT-X1 from Best Buy on Monday and this morning I started my laptop and it went to the Republic of Gamers screen and started beeping like crazy. I hit Esc and saw that it was hanging on "Checking NVRAM". I called Asus and they had me remove the AC Power and battery and then find the reset button and hold it in for ten seconds. It fixed it but it also worries me.

The tech guy on the phone said it could be caused by many things. The Best Buy guy says it was probably a BIOS firmware glitch. I always assumed this was caused by a motherboard issue.

Best Buy said not to worry unless it happens again. I, however, only have 9 days or less to decide whether to take it back anyways. What would you do?

Look for a BIOS Update. ;)

I dont know, I would probably return it, and buy another one. Meaning, buy a new/different G50VT. To play it safe. Because you never know, and it will only take a small amount of time, to return it and buy another. Which could save you alot of money and trouble in the end.

Others here can better diagnose your hw/sw problem. With 9 days left, I would probably try to use it heavily for the next few days and see how it goes. If it were to happen again in the next few days, then bring it back.

You didn't mention whether you were messing in the BIOS or not. If it happened spontaneously, it could be your memory.

Anyways the thing to do is to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version, which is 209 at the moment.

You have at least 1 year warranty.

And my understanding is the retail store wont take it back as its working right now... It has to be defective for them to take it back without restock fee and being its working fine again that wont happen... They wont exchange it for you just because you had a 1 time issue.

But I would say run memtest86+ on it for a few hours, than run prime95 on it for a bit and see.

This actually sounds more like a video card issue.

Being it was at Checking NVRAM that is video ram... Could be video card going or defective... Try to run some video stress tests also.

All in all, if its a hardware issue like that I would not stress TOO bad because if its failing it WILL do that again and those ones are easy repairs as its simple to find a part that is flat out dead...

But if its something that happens in and out, than that will be an issue.

So like others say, you got a week left, beat it up and see how it goes...

Now would also be the time to consider extended warranty or ADD warranty from them as you have seen what it feels like to be worried.

Even if you exchange it something can happen to the new one down the road.

I was lucky. Got Asus to DOA exchange my g50 with a brand new one after 1 RMA, and than got the free 3rd year warranty...

Now their customer service and tech department lack a lot because I have a motherboard for a desktop and its on its 5th RMA but when you get the right people they are good. haha

NVRAM = CMOS memory, not VRAM. :p

    The 'NV' stands for nonvolatile.

Edit: OK maybe an extended explanation is in order... since it was beeping after 'checking NVRAM' that means the checksum of the contents didn't match what it actually read. That can be a RAM problem, or a corrupted CMOS setting. Resetting the BIOS to defaults fixed the problem because it resets the checksum along with all the settings... if it happened spontaneously there is a chance that the RAM is flakey, so running memtest is a good idea.

I have had this problem a few times. It's not really alarming for me as I have had this EXACT same problem 3 times and pulling the battery out and putting it back in solved it. I'm not sure what is wrong, but it's not broken or anything so I'm not worried about it.

well if you want to take it back in working order without getting charged the stocking fee, just tell them that you have a defective unit and explain to them that you hear a high pitch noise everytim you have a headset connected to the line in and a USB device connected righht next to it.

This is a well known g50vt issue and you can replicate it very easy.

yeah this has happened to me too (g50vt-x1), pulling out the battery for a few seconds and putting it back in solved it.

Search around the forums, there's several threads about this.

Well, so far I have flashed the BIOS and updated the video. I need to pick up a cd to run memtest86+.
