I ordered a V1JP AK028E but received the following email stating it is no longer available and details of the replacement, is the replacement any good, whats the difference between the graphics cards (is the replacement better?):

Thank you for your call, unfortunately we have been contacted by our Asus destributor and have been informed the Asus V1JP AK028E is end of life. I have put the spec to the laptops direct replacement in this email. We can have this unit sent to you at the same price as the Asus V1JP AK028E and will be avalible on the 2nd of August. If you have any other enquiries please don't hesitate to email me.

I apologise for the delay and any inconvenience.

    V1S-AK013E
    15.4" TFT (WSXGA+, Colour Shine) - Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo T7500 2.0G - Video Camera Built-in(1.3 million pixels) - nVidia Geforce 8600M GT 512 on board - 2048MB(1024x2) DDRII 667 SDRAM - SATA 200GB HDD - DVD Super Multi D/L - Gigabit LAN - Intel 4965AGN WLAN - Bluetooth Built In - Vista Business

Please help detail the differences and is it recommend I accept the latter model.

    Regards

Yes, the V1s is the newer of the V1 series.

    V1s at the price of a V1j, nice :)

Thanks for the reply coriolis, obviously if I was experienced I would not have placed my original post so is there any way you could point out the obvious differences for me.

    Thanks again

Out of curiosity, what were the specs of the V1Jp you planned on getting? In general, the V1s has a newer and faster processor, a much faster video card, a larger hard drive, and is lighter. It's a better all-around notebook, so I'd be happy to get it at the price of a V1j.

    Spec V1JP V1s
    Processor* T7200 2.0 GHz 667MHz Cache T7500 2.2 GHz 800MHz Cache
    GPU ATI Mobility Radeon x1700 w/ 512MB NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT w/ 512MB
    HDD* 120GB 5400RPM 200GB ? RPM
    Memory* 2GB 2GB
Wireless Intel 3945 abg Intel 4965 abgn
I used the specs of the V1JP from your signature, and the specs of the V1S from your post, but specs with a * are those that can easily be changed or customized from the retailer, although some will void Asus warranty. You will not be able to put the same processor in both however.

In any event, the V1S is superior to the V1JP in all respects and in every one of the specs listed above.

Also, being a Santa Rosa refresh, it'll offer slightly better battery life.

Its GPU is a DX10 card - and performs much better than the x1700 as well.

Thanks so much for the replies guys. I have just emailed to confirm acceptance of the offer and I just have to wait untill week 2 in august for it.

odin243, the specs of the v1jp I ordered are those detailed in my signature, I added them as I thought this was what I was gonna get, all change eh?

Thanks for the comparison taelrak, I'm glad for the info regarding the graphics card. I have read a lot about driver issues with the ATI X1700 and asus.

Please tell me life is simpler with the nvidia card.

    Cheers

You're in luck. nVidia drivers/support have always been >> ATI drivers/support.

Congratulations for a very nice and top-performing new notebook (V1S), for the price of a very nice (but older and with known annoying issues) notebook (V1J).
