Here's my dilemma (a good one by the way). I own the gateway 7811fx and for the most part I think it's great. However, and it's my own fault for not doing research - the resolution is a bit high. I enjoy the extra real estate but text is a bit small. On top of that, some games (and it might just be a rare case with my machine) like the Call of Duty series have some lag issues.

I'm thinking about G50Vt-X1 since the specs are similar. The 15" will be better for portability and the resolution is lower. I'm also thinking the gaming would run smoother and be a little more future proof? The last thing I want to do is run games in non native resolution. However, the resolution on paper seems a bit low and maybe even awkward. I was hoping to find some youtube videos but only found one.

I'm afraid I'll be trading in one problem (too high resolution) for another (too low). Ultimately, I'll need to see it in person to decide but I would like to gather some feedback in regards to the screen and gaming.

    Thanks!

I had the P-6831FX for a while and it was 1440x900, a resolution which I likeed a lot. I've got the G50VT-X1 now and sometimes the screen isn't quite tall enough for websites. I don't have any actual complaints, really. I like the resolution. I was wary of the resolution before I got the laptop, but I like it now, it's great for gaming since it's high enough for games to look good, but low enough to get great performance.

Be careful, though because Best Buy's warranty is different, if you get a similar priced Asus laptop through newegg you get a 1-2 year international warranty with damage coverage and the option to upgrade, but with best buy you only get 1 year, no damage coverage and you can only get the best buy warranty.

If that's not an issue I highly recommend the rig, I love it.

This sounds good. I like 1920x1200 for the real estate but tired of squinting. Also good to hear that COD runs flawless.

    Anyone else?

    No complaints at all here.

I was originally a tad skeptical about the relatively low resolution, but on a small laptop screen it's hardly a concern anyway since I'm not a fan of squinting to make out half my desktop.

The fact it's 16:9 is also a bonus if you plan on watching movies.

    Amen.

I was looking at TF2 (i think it was) display settings. And it had 16:9 option but only 1360x768, not 1366x768. How does this affect the image? And in general will recent games work well with it?

    Thanks!

6 pixels won't be a visible difference at all.

I actually like the 1366x768 resolution. At 15", everything on my desktop is the perfect size, and I don't think I'd really want it to be bigger. The simplicity of setting up games (max res, all settings up, play) is nice as well.

I can't speak for TF2 specifically since I haven't had it installed for a while now, but all the other Source engine games have the option to specify aspect ratio and support 1366x768 for me.

It could be driver related though I guess, were you checking on a different computer?

A lot of people...myself included...dislike running outside of native...it just doesn't look as "clean" on an LCD.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

To the OP: My previous laptop ran 1440x900, My desktop is 1680x1050...that said, I far prefer gaming at 1366x768 with full everything. Movies are better at this aspect ratio (16:9) too. Web browsing is fine though admitedly better on my higher res desktop (22" so no squinting). In short, best laptop I've ever had! As a side note, I went in planning to buy a Gateway FX and I'm quite glad they were sold out.

I agree 100%. I don't like using any LCD for that matter (Laptop or desktop) without running it in Native resolution. It doesn't look as good when it's not native.

Yup, anything outside native resolution looks like crap to me.

I've been reading up on the whole 16:9. It's really interesting how manufactures are pushing towards this as a new standard to cut costs. I've never used a 16:9 but I love widescreen so anything wider will probably be ok with me. I won't know for sure until I see it in person so later I'm heading to BB to check one out. I will report back with results.
