I was thinking about getting the Asus U46e frm BB. I'm reading what seems like many problems & that cs might not be great. Should I fork over the cash to BB for the xtra protection? I'm not tech savvy but I'm not an idiot. I can usually figure things out thanks to the Internet. I've solved virus/malware issues & changed out hard drives.

well for starters is it an asus model version ie u46e-a1 or a bestbuy version ie u46e-bbst? if its a bestbuy version ie not a variant listed on asus site, then the bestbuy warranty would be the only warranty, and without that you would be sol.

continuing that double check bestbuy is an authorized asus reseller. if not, then no warranty if bought through them. remember just because they are selling asus notebooks doesn't mean they're authorized for asus warranty coverage on machines bought from them.

same issue is true for each individual bestbuy location and authorized service by asus.

as to service quality its always dice, and will continue to be, as one can't clone people and their experiences, much les the environment situation and interactions that lead to a great location versus passable. that being true you pretty much default on the fast/cheap/good pick two game to fast and cheap as your viable options. if the manufacturer asus ofers free two way shipping with their warranties and would have the best access to parts, and the bestbuy would have to order parts but be potentially just up the street the time factors likely a wash as shipping the machine ~= to time to ship parts. from there its just a matter of if an equivalent bestbuy warranty is significantly cheaper than one through asus on a qualified model.

Skip the extra-cost Best Buy warranty and purchase one from SquareTrade instead. You can get three years of coverage with accidental damage protection (provided you bought the notebook new) for less than $100 with a coupon/promo code. The warranty is transferable should you decide to sell it later.

Wow this sounds great. How does this work if unit needs repair? Do I send unit to manufacturer or to ST?

Go through Power Notebooks or someone else, Best Buy has awful service and the gimped versions of the G series.
