... on the G1S? I'm a grad student that's forced to attend weekly meeting. Would the G1S be too cool for those meetings? :D

depends, how cool is your professor?...wait don't answer that.

the way I see it, how important is professionalism in those meetings?

If you're all on a pretty friendly basis and the meetings are pretty relaxed and informal (which I'd guess they are being in academia), I'd say...why not? During college, if I saw my TA walk in with a G1 for an academic meeting, I'd be impressed (sadly, not a single one walked in with any laptop of any kind...). If I saw my 70-year old professor walk in with one, I'd still probably be impressed, but think he's a little weird for his age...maybe.

On the other hand, if you have to put on a suit and tie for those meetings, I'd say, the G1 just isn't quite conservative enough...(you don't want to give the impression you're all about games and not work). If I saw a client or someone I was in a business relationship with walk in with an obvious gaming laptop, I'd wonder just how serious he was about work instead of play.

But beyond all that, as long as you feel comfortable with it, buy what you like - they'll only see it once a week; you have to live with it for the next few years...after all, it's flashy, but it's not annoyingly-so like the XPS. If it really bothers you though, err on the side of conservatism: a plain notebook won't make a *bad* impression, but it won't make a good one either...a flashy one will give some reactions on either side.

Hah. Flip flops are standard issue actually. Gotta love Florida weather. I guess part of the problem is I'm not necessarily a "boring" person persay. Folks would wonder why their resident IT person (yeah.. not only am I a grad student, but I have to fix their computers too.. *cry*) would come in with something boring heh. The outside of the G1S doesn't have a bad look imo. Then again, if my boss figured my laptop was part of a gaming line, I'd be really, really impressed heh.

oh...in that case go for it :p As an IT person, your computer illiterate victims..err clients..expect you to have the best of the best - and even if you don't, you're expected to *look* like you have the absolute best...the G1 works great for that =P

Odd. My officemate thinks exactly the same way (he's the other half of the crude IT department). Thanks ;)

the G1S does look awesome...i think that's one of the reasons i plan on buying it over IFL90 or some of the other options i was looking into.

there's something oddly disconcerting about a thread named "should i pull the trigger" from a guy with "nuclear" in his alias...(ignoring the fusion part =p)

Most people at school are impressed (some even jealous) with the looks of my G1. Most have never heard of Asus, and they ask me where I got it. The green side lights, and sometimes the green "eye" and green ASDF keys have been the object of inquiry at times, but often people are too busy staring at the glossy surfaces and the screen. This laptop definitely won't go unnoticed, but not in a negative sense.

BTW, with a nick like nuclfusion4, I'm guessing that you're in physics. ;) I'm currently a physics undergrad, and the "people" I'm referring to above are fellow physics folks.

nuclear fusion isn't necessarily physics...it could also be chemistry. well, it's definitely science-related, that's for sure.

If you like it, go for it, I think the professor couldn't care less about what kind of notebook you bring into meetings... he'll maybe make a remark the first time he sees it and then forget all about it.

Trust me, he has much more things on his mind than the lights on your laptop, and many of them much more important...

    <--- nuclear engineer

And yeah, I know he won't care to be honest. First reactions might be interesting though. ;-)
