This might be a stupid question, but should I go to the ASUS site and register my laptop? Do I need to in case I need warranty work in the future? It appears to me that I do this by becoming an ASUS member or something. Thanks.

Warranty goes by serial number. They do account for shelf life as well. I doubt registering sooner or later affects your warranty

For one thing, if you call for support they'll already have your info, that's a good enough reason in my book. They also use that for recall notifications and such.

Warranty on things like motherboard and lcd screen's are now requiring dealer invoice on the ensemble stuff.

I'm sure you don't have to register with Asus. Most of the products I've purchased in the past, except my Western Digital harddrive, only required proof of purchase, your invoice.

It won't hurt if you do though.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I was going to register, but I don't like how they ask for so much personal information that is required and not an option. I guess that is the main reason why I haven't registered yet. If it was just the basic questions like name, address, phone and email I would be fine with it, but they ask for education, birthday, etc.

That stuff is to help figure out their market..... As much as I don't like it when people ask for that stuff, I do understand and in the end it actually helps Asus determine what models and configurations to bring in..... I heard that the latest laptop configurations (the new W3, V6, and W5) have something to do with rebate program they offered last summer...... maybe they used information for those forms to better inform them of what to bring in next?

Well, since a company like Asus really does take customer reviewers and suggestions seriously.... there's no better way for them to work.
