I was hoping to buy the G51J-A1 but it was removed from the store of my choice. They now only sell the G51Jx-A1 and when I inquired about the G51J-A1, they said that Asus did not want to sell them anymore because of the overheating issues. But now the newer model has a weaker GPU (is it by very much?) and I am hoping to hear your views if I should wait for a new G51? (Anyone knows if they are going to come out soon?) :)

well not certainly overheating issues, it was because of the BSoD issues.
Unless you need a laptop right now, I would wait since DirectX 11 is coming out and soon there will be a new GPU. (example fermi but I'm not sure if that's gonna go into 15inch laptop) but you can hope for one.
If you don't really care about the size I recommend the G73JH-A1.
G51J-3D is the next model that ASUS is coming out with. If you really need a laptop right now and you got some cash, buy a sager thats 15inch screen. (included with i7 and 280M GTX)

I can't have a laptop larger than 15.6" or too heavy. That Sager is too heavy and expensive. I need a laptop below US$1600.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll wait for the laptops with fermi. GTX 4xxM series?

So should I get the G51Jx or wait for a newer model? Or any other laptop recommendations? I'm in Singapore, by the way, so only mainstream brands are sold. The only other imported brands available are Sager and MSI.

I'd wait it out till asus brings a new 15 inch model with better cooling like the new g73 (its not released yet, and not tested, but it has more than 1 cooling vent unlike the current G series so theres hope).
You could always consider a sony vaio f, they also have the corei7 cpu now, and the graphics don't seem to bad for a casual multimedia user.

G73 is too big. Sony too expensive. Damn. I really like the G51Jx now.

And your source is? based on baseless rumors from sites that looking for hits which Nvidia them self denied again and again?

Fermi is out in March for desktops officially (6months after the release of 5000 series which is still a big delay) with mobile parts 40nm to follow by Q2, and fermi is not "huge or big" it's on par with other cards for desktops.

The question is will it be decent enough or scaled down so much?

it doesn't take long to release a mobile gpu once you got the desktop versions.
i rather wait for fermi now which is a true next gen card over 5000 series which is more of the same for notebooks at least it's a rebrand.

Is the GTS 360M in the G51Jx MXM 3 Type B? If so, I think it would be possible to swap it for the Fermis once they are out, right?

Asus won't let you change the gpu. Personally getting a g51jx right now is kinda a waste.
Asus came up with a new cooling system and a whole bunch of new stuff for the g73jh. I believe the g51jx has a same coolng system as other g50 series, which has been criticized for a long time.
Soon Asus will release a 15inch screen with the new cooling system(at least I hope) and you can get that. Do you really need a laptop right now? I would wait until newer gpu comes out for the g50 series.

But I think that with less heat and power requirements, the GTS360M will have a higher overclocking headroom compared to the GTX260M.

I'm actually on this dilemma too. G51J specs, price, design, and size is just perfect that other alternatives is hard to replace it. The BSoD issue still unresolved in this 2-3 months has really becoming huge cons for this machine. I really don't want to use the older OS to get it BSoDless.

Sager NP8690 is close 2nd, but the battery life is 33% shorter than G51J's, has rather blocky design/slightly worse key placement than G51 series, and slightly more expensive (not so much actually, given it has higher clock RAM and slightly better GPU). Not to mention, it'll be problematic if I want to claim warranty from outside US.

If G51Jx still have BSoD problem, I guess I'll have myself downgraded to G51Vx. Thing is, I'm not sure should I get the one with Q9900 or P8700.

G60 series unfortunately have lower resolution than G51 series.

Ah, didn't know you know the higher screen resolution. That's actually the same reason I'm turned off of the G60 series as well. I think the G51Jx's new GPU will resolve the BSOD issue though. Hopefully Asus learned its lesson.

While on the topic, has anyone heard anything concrete on a replacement to the G51Vx-X3a? I'm looking to get one of those because of its cheaper price compared to the G51Jx and Newegg looks to be clearing out stock, but there's been nothing shown yet.

Really? When would the newer 15 inches come out? A rough date? If it's not too far away, I'll wait for it. My current A8Jr is becoming a piece of trash. I guess I'll only wait till the start of April at most.

Did I see that the g51Jx-3d has a FHD screen, unlike the older model?

My 3 years old model ASUS A8Js have 1440x900 screen resolution. I definitely won't go lower than that.

    Hmm,

I was thinking about getting the g73 but the 15 inch screen on this model appeals to me. I'm assuming Asus will resolve the BSOD issue but since this model only comes with a 500 gig hd does that mean it will not have another bay for an additional hd? And is this graphic card that much of a dropoff fron the gtx260?

there will be only 1 HDD bay. and the graphics card is most likely a ~10% slower card.

For gaming purpose, will it be better to pick G51Vx instead? Because it still has GTX260 GPU but slower processor than 720QM (Don't games nowadays more GPU intensive than CPU intensive?)

Also remember the GTX260 comes underclock on Asus G51/G60 series, we dont know yet how the GTS360 might come from factory. But overall OCing it, it should be a little slower than the 260m.

So can anyone confirm that the G51Jx-3D does come with a Full-HD screen unlike the old one that had the 1366x768? Maybe I'll get that. Or I'll wait for a review of the G51Jx before deciding if I would wait for a new line of 15.6" laptops from Asus.

Wait, has no one gotten the G51Jx yet or know anything about the clock speeds of the GTS 360M?

I personally doubt it'll have any screen other than 1920x1080. The thing with G51Jx right now is that it may or may not eliminate the BSoDs problems in G51J. If they successfully get rid of that problem, I'm definitely getting this one. Otherwise, I might have to pick older model G51Vx variants.
