i have been waiting since early december for a new sandy bridge laptops...but cant wait anymore should i just get a N43??
i dont see much difference between the current N43 and the new sandybridge laptops except they have longer battery life (which is really not a probelm since i will be carrying my adapter everywhere)
and a little faster processor...with nvidia gpu which has about the same power as 430m
so is it worth the wait for new sandy bridge models??
i probably have to pay more than the current N43 price..
so could anyone point out the major difference between the N43 and the new sandy bridge laptops??
-
Sandy Bridge is just the new gen of cpu/chipstes from intel, they will be faster and more efficient, probably also come with usb3 native support, but if you cant wait a month or two, then just grab whats available right now, the n43 is a nice package.
-
The first gen notebooks with sb. looks like a crap to me .. looking at the tests.
Have to wait until amd/nvidia comes out with the next gpu and not just renaming.
Next notebook: 3dmark06 15k and under, not interested in upgrading. -
Of course, you should.
Why would you buy something that will be outdated within 2-3 weeks? That is completely nonsense (unless you are in dire need of a laptop and you cannot live with it).

kind of out of topic, is there any announcements of 13 incher sandy bridge based netbooks?

knowing intel i can only assume that they will acomplish better battery life and better performance by not shedding any minutes of the currently dismall battery life which in it self if an improvement worth waiting for
-
Onthopic: First gen sb notebooks = close same or a bit above performance then today's notebooks with longer battery life. -

not exactly. they have been working on a way for wireless devices to communicate while using a fraction of the power they require now. quantum communication articles include alot of interesting concepts and developments. Quantum Secure Direct Communication with Cluster State
Quantum entanglement or anything that can allow more efficient communication will most likely be used by major networks. How we transmit data today will be a thing of the past tomorow. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
judging by the performance that the quad core line have shown us:
Improved battery life (quad core i7 2820qm made 8+hours of internet surfingon a 71wh battery)
Performance: the i7 2630qm is more powerful than the i7 940xm which was the top of the line 1000 bucks processor from the last gen
Now you get that the improvement in battery life is considerable, adding that it was measured with a 17'' and with a quad core.
the current arrandale line is already outdated.
Premium price is up to debate, currently we dont have pricing schemes of any laptops, unless the ROG g73 and g53, with the added premium of 100-150 bucks, with a CPU that has double the performance. And we do have the HP dv7 which retails for the same amount of bucks.
Intel made clear that SB is to overrule arrandale, the chips can be bought at the same price as the arrandale, and the arrandale chips have not dropped in price, so yeah some notebooks might milk the consumer (which is not only a expected move, but something that is done when a new product arrives), but looking at the dv7, it should stay at the same price.
Unless you have some more info on this issue I suggest you to withdraw from commenting. -

The title of the article dont lie, the chip is incredible -
theres always something new on the horizon, but it does sound as if its a big stepup from the current ones, so its your call. personally i dont like buying the newest tech, usually i buy stuff thats slightly outdated just so that im not disappointed when the next new thing comes out a week later lol
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
oh yes the time horizon matters, but when its so close aint it worthy? specially with that incredible figure of battery life?

Since begin december I was very interested in the ASUS N53JQ-SZ214V. I read some good reviews on the Internet of the N53J and the congifuration of the N53JQ-SZ214V with I7-740QM, FHD and Blue ray should satisfy my needs (complete configuration: Asus N53JQ-SZ214V-BE 90NZUA638J1355VL131 | LASystems )
Other manufacturers are much more expensive for a laptop with that kind of specification.
This morning I received message from the reseller that the configuration was at last in stock in Belgium.
But, last week I followed a few discussions describing how impressive the new SB is. Some recent owners of a notebook with an old processor even bring back their machine and order a new one with a SB. Should I wait another (few) month(s) till Asus renewed their N53j with the new SB or not?
I think I shall not wait and 'll order the one I mentionned above. These are the reasons why:
1. I'll use it as multimedianotebook. Internet, some photoshop, watching a movie on the FHD, burning a dvd, ... . Eventually I' ll play some games but these 'll surely not be high-end. For that kind of things the N53JQ-SZ214V 'll be OK for the next 3 years, I guess.
2. If the first laptop with SB in th the US will be shipped begin February, what time 'll they be in stock in Belgium?
3. Could anyone confirm how much more expensive the laptop 'll be with the new processor? I'm not prepared to pay 25% more.
4. It's not sure the renewed N53J 'll be available in Belgium in a configuration with FHD and Blue ray,...
Could you agree with my reasoning or could anyone convince me nevertheless to wait?
thx for any advice -

as you can see there is gain on battery life, performance, and graphics
asus usually launches their line first in asia, europe than US, the rest of the world is basically forgotten -
If anyone has any official information about release date/price please share it because there are always people that can't wait.
Release date for Europe (Portugal): write here if you know -
Launch (Release?) date is 1/9/11 for mobile chips according to intel's processor spec finder
@danzo123, Sandy bridge is a pretty big step in performance and technology.
I would highly suggest that you wait about a month and get a laptop that can support the 2920xm sandybridge chip and has a decent directx11 video chipset, but get the laptop that comes with a lesser CPU so that the price is still economical. This way, 2 years down the road, you can upgrade to the 2920xm (or the last Sandy Bridge CPU supported by your laptop beyond the 2920xm, who knows if a new socket or chipset is needed for the 22nm shrink) really cheaply and you'll get 3.5GHZ Turboboost + an unlocked multiplier (or however overclocking is done with Sandy Bridge).
It makes sense to get a laptop with the latest chipset, but not the fastest CPU / vid card. -
I have some information from a respectable retailer that the g73sw model should be available for orders in around 1 week.
The g53sw model should take another 1 or 2 months they mentioned. -
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
AFAIK both models have the 460, but if the G53 is released a month or two later as it seems it may be, maybe it will have a 5-series card, since they were just announced.
-
That's more than i expected (for g53sw).
Just hope that asus n53sv doesn't take that long. -
@Cloudfire Yes with 460m. I'm gonna order one the minute it's available.
@slowdive Taking in consideration I'm a bit further than you are, I should have to wait even longer for retail channels here to get it, so that's why I am gonna order it from the US. It's roughly 150$ shipping, plus local VAT taxes (another 100$ i might add). It's not as much as I had expected so I'm gonna pull the trigger. Shipping might be a tad cheaper for you in PT, so once shops in the US you should contact some to check about shipping. Warranty is international so no biggie there. -

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
the 500 series is just a rebrading, except for the new 485, which again is not from the 500
-
@Mr MM
Maybe it is, or maybe isn't. I don't care, because i can get new Asus with i5 + 540m in same price as i5 + 425m is now.
And 540m is like 25% faster than 425m ? It still update for me! -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
it is an update, but one I would not take, since that seeing the performance of the SB processors,t he arrandale is more than dead to me, they dont even exist

excaliberpc changed N53SV status from "available on January, 18" to " in stock"...
Anyone knows a good and reliable online store in Europe where the shipping cost is not so high? -

Anyone know roughly what kind of a premium will be charged for notebooks with the new sandy bridge? And I wonder how quickly Asus will push these new chips into their new models... ie can we expect them in March or April (mainly interested in the U series models).

My opinion for thoose willing to buy today a laptop is to go for one with SB.
I'm also looking for a laptop (G73 serie) since nov last year, then heard about Intel end of line chipset and new sandy bridge.
I told myself at that time: maybe it's time to buy the G73JW model when the price goes down while new laptop models are coming.
Then I kept following all news on SB and G73 series, when first prices of SB were annouced then when first tests were published even on this forum, I decided to wait for the G73SW model and not for the old technology to be lower.
Well, looks like now the old G73JW and the new G73SW are almost at same price for comparable equipment.
But:
1. new model processor is as porwerfull (or more) than the old one with a 940XM one (meaning an old G73 to achieve same performance would already cost today almost double the price the new one)
Of course you can wait for the 940XM to cost one day 100$ in the next 3 or more years, but I guess that in the meanwhile you may also have to buy new battery(ies) too...
2. I saw in this forum that G73 with SB can last even 3 or more hours, while old one is 1 or 2 hours (WITHOUT an 940XM!)
So, I'm glad to have been patient and still ready now to wait for the G73SW-3DE to be available
For the G73 serie it's pitty that they don't use optimus, because for thoose who does not know, the new Intel processors for SB are equipped with a quite good basic integrated GPU in the CPU. GPU which is also enough powerfull to watch a movies in full HD 1080p for example, that's not bad as that helps to watch a movie and keep battery longer (so you can expect to see a full movie of 1h40 or even more). -
Does anyone know about the Asus N53SV-A1, i would like to know when it will be getting an SB I5 model will be available, also do you think the i5 will change the bad battery life it has now ( 4 hrs no wifi on. 2hrs with it on) looking for something like this but with 8 hrs if that's even Possible.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
I pretty much think that the battery estimates were done pretty in the wrong side. The battery wh is low, but it should have lasted more than that.
The SB i5 models will be launched at 20th feb. So expect it to appear at a later date.
But for 8h you have to have a huge battery, the one that anandtech tested had 71wh, the one that the asus has is 48wh, it is almost the double of battery power. -
Guess i have to wait for the Asus U41JF SB core i5 and Usb 3.0 it has an GT 420 or something i should be good with that it gets 9 +hrs now i only want to play MMo and I hope some COD
-
I'm REALLY glad that I went ahead and bought my G53JW-A1 instead of waiting for Sandy Bridge. Looks like folks are going to have to wait a while to get their hands on the new stuff:
