Is putting my notebook in sleep mode as good as shutting it down? Like will putting it in sleep mode prolong the life of the laptop as well as shutting it down? Cause if so its nice not to have to reboot the whole pc every time you go to use it. Im using a new asua z70va if that matters. Just bought it and I LOVE IT!!!

The notebook is not alive and "sleep mode" and "hibernate" are not to be confused with something a living thing needs to do to prolong their life. Sleep mode helps shut down the hard drive and lcd screen and helps save battery life while being ready to go at a moments notice. Hibernate is a great way to "shut down" with out taking all that precious time to actually save and close your programs.......
... Neither are going to help it live longer. -
so by leaving my laptop running all the time it would "stay alive" just as long as if i shut it down every time i finished using it??

There are two sleep modes:
Fn + F1 is "suspend" which stops the CPU, display and HDD but leaves the computer on with the programs still in RAM. The computer will restart at the press of any button. If running on battery, the battery will be slowly depleted.
Fn + F4 is "hibernation" which stops everything after copying the RAM contents to a special file on the hard disk. This mode does not use any battery power. The computer will only restart if open and the power button is pressed.
Suspend is good for temporary shutdowns when the computer is not being moved and is very appropriate if you want to conserve power when running on battery. Hibernation is the alternative to a real shutdown. I use it for overnight shutdowns or when travelling.
Either mode enables you to get back to where you were much more quickly.
Three notes:
A. You may need to enable hibernation in the power management options.
B. Make sure that you use the Asus approved network drivers - the one installed by Windows Update may stop the computer coming out of hibernation.
C. If you are connected to a network then your IP address may be reallocated while you are sleeping. To fix this, right click on the network icon and select repair.
Hope this helps,

To close, I would just shutdown when not in use. You never know when it may trigger on when traveling and the battery is still being used on suspension. I come from old school technology, "a real shutdown is always better". Come on, and extra few seconds of boot up never hurt anyone.
Sleep Mode??
