    Hi guys

I'm having problems with my CD/DVD drive on my A8Js. It is the TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D. This drive is the one that came with the laptop.

The first problem is that the read speeds of the TS-L632D are very low. For example it would take 6+ hours to install Battlefield 2 off one DVD and copying files off a DVD to the hard drive will take over 30 minutes for 1Gb. Installing a 1Gb application off one CD will take over 2.5 hours. CDSpeed on Nero Toolkit records the read speed at 0.14x.

The second problem is that the TS-L632D will ittermitently dissapear from the computer when no disk is in the drive. The drive (D: drive) will dissapear from windows explorer, as well as the device manager. The drive will not autoplay CD/DVDs inserted. The TS-L632D will only be redetected by the A8Js after a reboot.

    Other information:
    - Asus A8Js with duo 2.0 GHz and 1 GB RAM
    - Running Vista Home Premium with most recent updates via live updater
    - The TS-L632D is running on ATA Channel 1. Channel 1 is running on Ultra DMA Mode 2.
    - The TS-L632D driver is the default: 6.0.6000.16386

Have you guys got any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Speiro

    I have just one idea:

Some users have been having issues with DVD drives due to UAC in Vista (User Access Control). Try disabling User Access Control and see if the problems go away.

I was also going to say check that the drive is running in DMA, but you already did that :)

Besides UAC, such problems have also been caused by iTunes installing so-called filters for the DVD drive. Do a google search.
