This is really pissing me off...after about 3 weeks of using this thing..i see quite a bit of smudge marks on the palm rest of my W3J when viewing from certain angles. When I look at it when its right in front of me, it looks fine, but if I look at it from the side, I can see that there are quite a bit of smudges. Its looks really bad. I had initially gotten the first streak of the smudge when removing the **** sticker that came on the W3J. I removed the sticker and a little sticky stuff was left on the palm rest so I rubbed it, thinking it would be okay. Surely enough, the sticky stuff came out, but I now had a nice mark that was visible from the side view. Any way to get rid of this stuff? Water and a cloth? I tried taking pics of it, but its not showing up in the camera. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1 word... Google! I'm guessing it's just a little bit of glue residue that was pushed into the surface of the palm rests. The surface may seem smooth, but on a microscopic level, its full of pits and valleys.

Sounds like a product called goo-gone has some great reviews. Might be worth giving a try. Even if it doesn't work, there will always be stickers to peel!! -
thanks for the help..but there is no goo on the palm rest. Its not sticky or anything..there is just a mark on it. do you think this would still work? i dont want to screw it up even more.
-
Just dampen a cotton cloth and dab a bit of liquid dish soap on it.. Worked for me.
-
did dampenin the cloth with liquiid dish soap get rid of the goo/residue or did it get rid of the mark/smudge? i dont have any goo/residue..i only have smudges/marks.
-
As I said originally... I think it's residue trapped in the microscopic imperfections of the surface. I'm 95% some of that goo-gone and a toothbrush would take the marks out... in the 5% chance that it doesn't, you have a very useful product for removing stickers and have eliminated one of the possible causes of the smudges.

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. -
Whatever man... if you dont believe me, whatever...

FWIW I have the same issue on mine. The "Splendid" sticker didn't leave any marks, but that stupid one on the left sure did. It almost looks like the sticker took off the "glossy/shiny" part of the palm rest in certain areas. I tried alcohol sparingly and that did nothing. I tried dish soap, and that seemed to help a little, but the footprint of the sticker is still there. I am tempted to call ASUS to see about a replacement palmrest, since they usually come sticker-free. However it seems that the palmrest piece is pretty much the entire keyboard surround, too. Easy to remove and replace? Your guess is as good as mine.

So what happens now? Are the smudge marks still there? And for mattedmunds, is the footprint of the sticker still there?

This works very well. I also do it with baggage stickers glued to my passport after flying -
That's why I'm just gonna leave the massive stickers on my W3J!

I'm not sure how it would affect the finish but nail polish remover gets rid of just about anything sticky left from stickers and things like that. I wouldn't use it without finding out what it would do to the finish first though. Maybe try it on a tiny spot somewhere out of the way first...?

i just left the stickers on
i am thinking about getting a carbon fiber sheet since stickers are ghey -
The problem with leaving the stickers on is that it clutters the clean lines of the machine. It's like leaving the window sticker on your car for months after you've purchased it.
The smudge marks on my palmrest are still there. I tried Dawn and a microfiber cloth and that got it really clean, but the smudges remain. They're only visible when viewed under direct overhead light, or in daylight.
I'm guessing some of the glue remnants became one with the plastic due to heat, or friction, or something. Or maybe my attempts at cleaning it (or the simple removal of the sticker itself) took some of the "sheen" off the top layer of paint and as a result it's slightly "off" or "smudged."
Sure, it's annoying dropping $1800 on a machine and not having clean palmrests, but it's far LESS annoying than dropping $2400 on a TravelMate 8204 and not being able to see anything on the screen because of its horrible quality and backlighting. I'll take the W3J any day of the week! -
Hi Matt, did you remove the stickers after using your W3J for a while, or did you remove them rightaway at the time you got your W3J?
-
Sorry for the incredibly delayed response. I removed them the day I got the machine and the smudge marks have still not disappeared even after several cleanings. FWIW they haven't gotten any worse though, which is not what I can say about my discolored mouse button :/

I took all the stickers off on the day that i received my laptop, don't have smudge marks anywhere, even from the places with the stickers. I peeled the stickers really slowly.
-
How complicated is the design of the W3J palmrest? I wonder if some intrepid user might be able to get some custom made out of brushed aluminum
-
just send it in. you'll get it back sticker-free, or they'll take a shot in transferring the ati/windows xp solid-stickers over.

i finally decided to remove that left hand sticker and it came off leaving the actual sticky part behind. The sticker that came off had nothing on the back and was completely smooth. I tried jus rubbing it off then tried using water then soap but i still have some of the stickyness left and a whole lotta smudges
