So I flipped the fans in my C90s today....

I got bored and thought I'd flip the fans around in my C90s this afternoon. I found out a few interesting things.

    1. Flipping all four fans around so that they blew INSIDE the case dropped my average CPU temp by 5-7 degrees C. HOWEVER, this caused the entire notebook to become very hot because all the air was blowing inside the case.

I was hoping that the hot air wouldn't be to excessive because I also performed the "Vicious Mod". I was hoping that more air would end up blowing out of the holes that were cut.

This mod WILL drop your CPU temps by a good 5-7 degrees C, as well as making the fans more silent for some reason. I think it's because the motor for the fans is facing inside the case and thus can't be heard as easily.

Final Verdict: While this does decrease temps, it makes the entire case way too hot to be comfortable. So it's basically useless.

    2. While messing around with the fans I also realized something pretty important... For those of you having problems cooling your GPU, it's possible to move one of the "CPU Fans" over to the GPU side.

As some of you already know, the GPU fan doesn't really kick in until the CPU temp rises. This basically cooks the GPU. Well if you move one of the CPU fans over to the GPU side it should cool the GPU much better.

Then when the CPU temps rise the original GPU fan that you moved over to the CPU side should kick in and cool the CPU down.

Now this is mostly theory, but I can't see why it wouldn't work. My GPU stays pretty cool thanks to the "Vicious Mod" and Artic Silver 5. But, for those of you having problems with GPU temps, I would give this a shot.

Worst that happens is you move the fan back to it's original place. If this works for anyone please post!

How do you move the CPU fans to the other side? There is only 1 going to the GPU.

With F@H in the background my GPU stays between 88-100 under load

If you have the C90 flipped upside down with the Turbo Engine facing away from you the "GPU Fan" should be the very last fan on the left. What I'm saying to do is move this fan over 1 spot to the right and move one of the CPU fans over one spot to the left.

Make sure to keep it plugged in to it's original connector though. This should trick the computer into cooling the GPU more frequently. Then when the CPU temps rise the GPU fan that you moved over will still kick in and cool the CPU.

Like I said this is just theory and maybe I'm completely wrong, but it's so easy it's worth a try.

Hmm...thats a neat trick. What affects does it have on your CPU temps? Seeing as there are only really 2 fans cooling the CPU down now...how does the GPU fan spin up compared to the CPU fans if the CPU is getting really hot?

Well the way I understand it, and I could be wrong, is that when the CPU reaches a certain temperature ALL the fans kick on at a decent speed and cool everything down.

Until that temperature is reached though, the GPU is left to cook, for the most part. Doing this mod would make one of the CPU fans keep the GPU cooled down much better, in theory.

When the CPU temperature begins to rise the GPU fan (which is now in one of the CPU fan spots) will kick on and cool the CPU. I don't know what effect this will have on your average CPU temperature though.

I haven't tried this mod myself because my GPU temps are really good right now, but I might just give it a shot to see the results myself. I'll post back shortly.

I'll do the mod and if it seems like it's working I'll run a few 3DMark06 tests to see if it's worth it or not.

This might actually be a worthy mod after all. I just performed the swap and ran a 3DMark06 test. Max temp reached was 88C and most the tests didn't climb above the mid 70s.

    Score: 3560

Average CPU temp has stayed the same! 67-68C max under load with an E6700. I'll keep the fans the way they are for awhile and report back after a few hours of Counter Strike tonight.

I forgot to mention that my clocks during this test were:

    500/500

Going to see if the additional cooling will let me overclock some more.

    New Test:

    550 Core 500 Memory

    Score: 3716 Marks

    Max GPU temp reached: 89C
    Max CPU temp reached: 71C

Going to keep testing with high clocks.

Cant you just change the plug from one of the CPU fans wit the GPU fan?

Last week, I also tried switching the GPU + CPU connectors (so te gpu was pluuged in the cpu connector).

Result-> CPU was being cooled like hell but nothing on the GPU fan either =/

Its good to see everybody is being creative and trying new things. I have to say while I have not really tested it to see 100% I was under the impression that all fans came on at the same time and run at the same speed and that trigger was the cpu temp, so swapping fans in any way wouldn't change anything.

What if my temps are already 87C load lol. Thats no fair then :( If only there was a way to get the fans to spin 100% under gaming load. I would be happy then.

    That's a freaking nice temp but 256MB DDR2? Isn't tht the 8600M GS?

    Vicious,

If that's the case then this mod is useless. I'm running with it right now, I'll start to the notebook up with the ACE door off and see when the fans kick on.

Yes, before this mod my temps never reached above 88C under load. The only thing I've noticed is that it idles lower. It's still too early to tell, but I'm going to remove the notebook cover and see if I can notice a difference.

    Vicious,

Looks like your right. After looking at the fans with the ACE door off and running 3DMark06, I noticed all the fans run at the same speed. So....

Final Verdict: Flipping the fans to blow INSIDE the case as well as switching the GPU fan is... pointless. Sorry fellas.

Hmm nice ideas though. Whats the temp your cards go up to before artifacting? Mines is around 92.

Oddly enough my card will only artifact in one game. Thats Silkroad Online. Other than that, my laptop just freezes.

Mine does not artefact, even at 115C lol

If you play non intensive game, I would underclock the core to 200mzh, since you don't need it (400 on memory is still important if 1680x1050)
