On ebay, looks like I have some saving up to do!
On the other hand the HD-DVD player (which this database doesn't list as such, a few different sites using the same db, none show it as HD-DVD. I know that it is.) is a bit more reasonable.

Oh, I've sene these listed all over the place. Froogle "Asus C90S"
    http://www.google.com/products?q=asus+c90s

And you'll get loads of barebones, disk drives, TV-tuners, and even some graphics cards. If you try some other searches, even without C90S in the title, you'll get the graphics cards as well.

Anybody can, there are computer drives that do this, these just happen to be the one the c90 can come with that everybody is looking at, all notebooks use the same optical drive formfactor so you can get any of them and it will fit into any notebook, unless it doesnt follow the standards.

well, there are different pins and wattages and such, but they all conform to the the same general standards: compact, slimline and ultraportable. These just happen to be the slimline Blu-Ray and HDDVD players.

im thinking hd dvd will be for home use, like tvs and such and blu ray will go into computer becasue of its better storage capabilities,, and either way even if you get the one tht loses the war, it wont be standarized for many years now, so u will most liekly still be able to play cd's and dvd's on it.

But you'd still feel silly for paying premium bucks.

Didn't know that I thought once you get a drive your stuck with it... since most notebooks components are so hard to upgrade.

almost every notebook can easily upgrade the memory, hard drive, and the disk drive

ive never used a notebook where it wasnt just a few screws on the bottom

Disk drives are as easy to upgrade, but it is just hard to find the right parts.

Seems like apple does that kind of stuff on purpose. Same goes with the new phone even. You cant change the battery yourself... its internal and expensive.

thats why i said almost every laptop and not all, mainly the only eception to uprading drives is slot loading drives, which is basically only the apples and the new xps m1330
