Did asus screw us and decide not to make any more GPU's for the c90, the whole point was to be able to upgrade. So where are my new GPU's.
-
I think yeah, that's pretty much the situation, unfortunately. But I'll leave C90 owners have the final word, of course.
There are rumors of a C90P upgrade, but I'm not sure what GPUs would be made available for that upgrade, and whether they would be compatible with the C90S. -
It just sucks that you buy a laptop that you can upgrade, and then later you find out that if you got the top of the line stuff from the begining, you really wouldn't be able to "upgrade" later on, so it defeats the whole purpose of upgrading alltogether.
I love my C90, I just thought I would be able to love it more and more for at least a few years. Really all I want is a better GPU, Im ok with the CPU and 3gb ram is plenty.
So who is gonna buy the c90p knowing that Asus will just stop making things for it within the next year or two. -
...eventually someone is gonna create the formula for a good upgradeable notebook, until then your gonna have half a dozen companies all trying to come out with the standard. If nVidia truly wanted to it could of taken control of the MXM standard, taken responsibility of manufacturing and we would have something like PCI-express which has been around for 3 to 4+ years now and we could all upgrade the video cards in our notebooks to our hearts contend. The fact is, as soon as Asus decided to go with MXM 2.0, ppl knew there was going to be trouble unless there was going to be a drastic die shrink (which I was going for considering how much heat nV got foor the 8800GTX). And the fact is all the companies out there want to have total control of there notebooks like Apple does, the fact is this is the only reason we still have Gateway, so they make OEM agreements with nV for the technology and just proprietary cooling systems that only work with there notebooks and cards and everyone needs to by the latest notebook for the latest graphics even if the CPU is still good. This is why notebooks are generally designed only to last about 2 years and warranties reflect that. With desktops they know the user is going to want the latest graphics card in a year or two, hence life time warranties (who is going to keep their card forever) and the cards don't cost in the the thousands. Mind you there are some exeptions (Sager/Clevo) and Asus was trying to break the mold, but it wasn't as big a success as they hoped in would. The C90S was released in almost complete obscurity because it had so many bugs and was released as a BETA or work in progress, hence all the different versions on release where some worked and some flat out did not. I'm hoping the reason that the C90P has almost completely disappeared off the radar is the same reason. When the C90S came out I went around telling ppl how cool it was, but when they asked me if they should get it I told them flat out NO, this sounds funky and the kinda thing I like to play with. I like to reinstall my OS every few months just because I screw around with it so much, I like to test out things. Around here I'm known as the guy who gets the stuff first to work out the bugs and generally my friends don't buy it until I got through with it for about 3-4 months (lol, Vista was more like 8-9 months, but even I got it to work acceptably in a few months).
The reason I wouldn't buy the C90P isn't because support would be dropped in a years time, I expect a notebook to only remain up to date for about 2 years and I'm not complaining about how much or little I paid for the C90S for the performance I got (the CPU power is insane on its own right). I wouldn't buy a C90P because of the state that the C90S was released in, it was released in barely working order for the first month (Vista was buggy, but the OC worked; and XP worked, but non of the features worked). -

Anyone know if there is any limitations in the gpu slot that is in the c90p that would not allow them to be compatible with the c90s? c90p Pics alone make the board layout nearly identical to the c90s. -
C90S has an MXM II slot and C90P might possibly have an MXM III or even MXM IV slot I think.
-
If its MXM III or IV then all the C90s owners are screwed.
-
So what are the benefits of using MXM III or IV. I guess I'm asking what the difference between the three is.
-
Also worth mentioning is that the higher type slots are backwards compatible with the lower type cards, if that makes sense. For instance, If your laptop has a type MXM-HE slot, it can use ANY MXM card type I, II, or III. -
That really sucks
Maybe a 9700M GTS in the future? It's small enough to fit in the Asus G50:

(see lower right) -
I too feel screwed !
Why would ASUS release the C90s with out having at least 1 GPU upgrade available by now.
Look I really like my C90s and could live with some of it's faults (Heat + Noise) I bought my C90s thinking I would be able to upgrade in the future but no, what the hell was ASUS thinking!
I truly feel betrayed and just pissed off about the whole thing in general.
*** ASUS!!!!! -
it really sounded too good to be true. I bought mine because i was also HOPING ASUS would do good on their promise. And its really frustrating to know that we cant do nothing about it. sigh.
-
Any lawyers wanna file a class action lawsuit?
-
Just because a company says that they're going to do something, i.e. *promise something* doesn't mean that they have to hold true to their word. Right? Oh well..
-
EDIT: it's MXM 2.0....can't see any reason I'd want the P over the S though, not for money anyway -
Is that video card the same part # as the original???? -

Probably depends on revision of the card on other unknown nuances. Just wonder how it handles the heat issues.
That'll be the big question, can I run it without a cooling pan and not get lock ups. That's been the issue since day one with me for the most part. Not huge but not as it should be either.
Of course I think I'd like an Ati now though. -
I have that card and have never had any problems other than heat, but the c90 has heat problems anyways so i just did the vicous mod and cut holes under my gpu, now it runs at about 65 C while online and can get up to 96 while gaming for hours on end
I didnt realize the c90p was basically just a chipset difference, besides that its allmost the same computer. I hope that gentech is right and it is mxm 2 cause asus must be making at least one new card for the c90p.
It has all copper heatsinks instead of the alluminum, i wonder if we could get those seperately for the c90s.

Haha so many edits, It also says the highest card is gonna be the 8700mgt. That kinda blows. -
Yeah even though ASUS makes some very nice laptops I am NEVER going to buy one again because of the C90S disaster.
-
vinceboiii Animals are friends, not food.
im going to buy the gateway 6862 2morrow sorry asus c90s =[
-
If I had a C90S, I would try to get a hold of a 9600M GT thats MXM-II format.
the 9600M GT has specs that fit perfectly for MXM-II... under 25w TDP as well.
Although its not that much faster than an 8600M GT... but its still a step up.
So is the C90 dead to asus now?
