I know this is a little ridiculous but this is the first time I am playing a DVD on my ASUS though I have had it for 3 months.

The DVD player is a TSST corp CD/DVDW TS-L532A

I assume there is special software to run it.... that I don't just usw Windows Media Player.

But I haven't been able to find anything.

I am sick in bed and I want to watch a DVD.... :(

I feel like such a doofus that I haven't figured this out... but I have been so busy the past few months and now I am feeling poorly.

I found this CD that came with the ASUS that is from Nero. It says it is bundled with a CD/DVD recorder. Could that play the DVD?

I tried using Windows Media Player but it wants me to buy some codecs. This doesn't seem right. It seems to me that some kind of software should have come with the ASUS to play DVD's with.

I would second VideoLan/VLC. It is free and plays most anything. I use it myself. Media Player Classic is another option. Windows Media Player by itself can't play DVDs as you've noticed. It needs the codecs. Nero's Showtime can play DVDs if it came with your version of Nero. I usually just install Nero as the other stuff tries to take over everything which I find annoying. PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. all are the same.

I do not understand. How can a laptop come with a DVD/CD player and not with software to play it? I never have heard of such a thing.

    Is this standard with ASUS?

Well, that would be surprising with a $2400 notebook. The Nero CD does not have showtime on it. It has something it calls Nero media player but it seems as if it can only play audio not video, unless I am missing something. It is designed to burn DVD's and copy DVD's. Can it be that it doesn't Play them?

Thanks for the link though... I downloaded Media Player Classic before so I will try that first.

Did you not get AsusDVD XP? Check on the drivers/appd disc.

Yes, ASUSDVD is the software player that comes with the BuiltOn systems - it's what I had in my Z63 box (along with Nero etc) when it arrived a couple of months ago. You'll need to copy the product key off the CD to activate all the features on install, as I remember.

It's not a bad piece of software - although I use VLC for any other purposes (i.e. not regular DVD viewing); gives you more options and controls, but the interface isn't exactly clear sometimes.

Justitia I replied to your private message.

The one labeled AsusDVD is the right one.

Too bad it's a OEM version that only enables 2.0ch sound.

Jeez we pay a lot of money for these notebooks and you'd expect them to bundle a FULL version of DVD playback software, BUT NOOOOOOO.

It's still a great player. I use it to play DVDs on my Z70Va (Celia).

I watched Batman Begins on it in Theatre Mode. It was fantastic~! Also a tip for the audio playback; if you are alone in your room and it's quiet with no trains going by (like my apt :() go into the audio configuration and select Dolby Surround sound and select the first option that says Quiet Environment for full dolby sound, without compression. If you're in a loud environment select the loud one.

The Quiet Environment will playback better quality at a cost of a lower volume output. In your room with you sick it should be fine, so long as you're not sniffling the whole time. :D

I like that player a lot, but like I said in the PM I sent you, you could pay a couple bucks and get the full featured Core Media Player that plays DVDs. That player is MY fav' and will remain so. The Horizontal skin is just awesome. I love the way you can just tuck it up at the top of your screen, totally out of the way of ANY window, but still always on top with the Always On Top option.

I know you downloaded it, let us know how you're liking it.

    :)

This is with the AsusDVD application? Whoah, that's kind of counter-intuitive... Most other apps (and stand alone DVD players) tend to apply dynamic range compression for listening in quiet environments, so if you've set the volume to hear dialogue the explosions don't wake the neighbors. ;)

Oh, I'll add another vote for VLC while I'm here... I prefer xine for DVD playback (under linux) but for everything else VLC kicks keister.

Well I appreciate all the info... because the ASUS DVD player strongly recommends the Noisy environment selection for lap tops...and I selected that and now my low volume sound is solved (though the sound qualiy itself is not as good..as Shampoo suggests...)When I plug it up to speakers I will change to the selection Shampoo also suggests....

And I will check out VLC that everyone suggests another time...
