Hello, i recently ordered a Dell Inspiron 1520.(specs are in my sig) However there have been some delays and i am considering cancelling. Ive been looking at the G1S-A1 from my local computer store. The specs are

    T7500 2.2GHz, FSB: 800MHz, 4MB L2 Cache
    2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM
    15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) ColorShine TFT-LCD
NVIDIA GeForceGo 8600M GT GPU 256 MB Physical VRAM
    160 GB (5400rpm) SATA
Built-in Intel® High Definition Audio ( Azalia ) compliant audio chip
    Built-in Bluetooth™ V2.0+EDR
    Integrated 802.11a/b/g/n
    8 cell battery

This laptop would cost about $100 more than the dell in my sig. Now, here are some questions I got

    1. Which would be better quality. The asus or dell?
    2. Probably one of the major questions. I hear the dells 8600M GT uses GDDR2 while the asus one is GDDR3 (i think). Is this true? What kind of performance benefits would i get from the GDDR3
    3. How is the integrated wireless?
    4. Lots of dell screens have problems with "graininess" is there this problem with asus?

It's true, Dell has ddr2 where as G1s has GDDR3, when running 3dMark06 inspiron stock hits about 2900 and G1S hits about 3800.

I don't have a G1S but I have heard some problems with grainyness, but not nearly as much as the Inspiron.
As you can see by the Sig I did have the Inspiron, and I've seen the G1S at best buy.
G1S is not nearly as big and as bulky as the Dell, but it does look kinda futuristic.
As far as the wireless, I have no idea about the G1S but I know the Dell Intel Wireless N was very nice. It was always at full strength no matter where in the house I was.

Thanks. What about asus warranty? its gota be better than dells. This is what the warranty says for the laptop. 2-year limited global hardware warranty, 1-year battery pack warranty, 30 days Zero Bright Dot (ZBD)

Some more questions. Whats the difference between V1S-A1 and G1S-A1

I know that US comes with 3 year warranty.
Gets the 2 year + 1 year for US without having to pay extra.
And yes gets 30 day 0 dead pixel, personally just ordered the Asus so can't tell you to much else regarding warranty.
Can give you a few link to websites though for purchase.

The V1s is built using better materials.
    The V1s is lighter
    The V1s uses 512mb GDDR2 while the G1s uses 256mb GDDR3
    The V1s looks better (IMO)

What about that rebate thing on the forums? Can that be used for Canada? And how does that rebate thing work?

    It's an US only one.

Once you buy it, follow the instructions as listed by including the serial # and UPC as well as a photocopy of the recipe.

Ooohh, I found another. $100 off G1s, and yes, you mail it in, and in 4-8 weeks mail you a cheque.

I have a g1s. Its a great laptop. There is no graininess on the screen. GDDR3 vs GDDR2 is a huge difference. theres a thread comparing the two in the gaming forum. It does Wireless N card, i only use wireless G, and it works great.
Quality wise, Asus all the way.
If its only a 100 dollar difference it should be a no brainer, as it comes with a mouse and a backpack free.

    1. Not sure about Dell vs Asus quality. I find the G1S well built and the tech support more knowledgeable than Dell tech sup
    2. Yes. Not sure how DDR2 performs (I think there is a thread in the Asus forums that discusses this) but gaming is great on the G1S!
    3. Integrated wireless is solid. In a 3-level apt with the router in the basement I get strong signals on every floor.
    4. There is some graininess in the Asus screen . It doesn't bother me tho - movies and games look awesome!

I highly recommend the G1S over the dell.

Overall though, would the G1S-A1 be a better buy than the dell? Comparing the specs. Even though the Asus one would cost be $100 which isn't too big of a problem. Also, would the G1S-A1 run games better?

Where is the $100 rebate thing

I made a new thread on the rebate, it was out before but it was listed as Canada and US, and the US reps told me it wasn't valid, so I took it off. But I found another one, Canada only and it was the same rebate.

As it says on the rebate, it has a step by step guide.

I had the dell and i've seen the G1S, of those were my only 2 choices I'd take the G1S, although it is having a bios problem which hopefully is fixed soon.

As you can see though I went with the V1S which has the same vid card as Dell DDR2, but the build and everything else about it will be better and lighter.

Edit: The G1S is the most powerful 15 in laptop out as far as running games I believe.

Hm but when they fix this problem. How would we update the BIOS with the fix?

Also, is there any need to reformat the HDD when you get the G1S? Does it come with all the reinstallation software?

From what I've read they're aware of the problem, and it should be fixed with the new bios. How soon that will be, who can say, but I'm sure soon.

Have you ever updated a bios?
It's not to difficult, you'll have to read up on it.
It'll give an explanation when it comes out as well.

I have never done it on a laptop. Does every G1S-A1 have the same BIOS problem?

    Yup, everyone of them.
I'm sure it'll be fixed, like I said if those were the 2 choises I'd still choose the G1S. There's no way they'd let something like that go to long without fixing it.

I am so glad there is this rebate thing. I printed out the form so when i get the laptop i need to cut out the UPC code and serial number? Also, for the receipt can i scan it or something?
