    Hey,

I have a usb recording interface. I plug it in to the USB on the left, it's good. If I try the right side port, WinXP prompts me with a hardware install wizard. What the $hit.

For my wireless optical mouse, I plug it on the right and it's good. On the left, XP says a bunch more msgs (the bubble pop ups in the tray) like "USB device recognized" then "USB Composite Device" then something else. Sometimes it works with that port, sometimes it doesn't.

    Anyone got a solution?

btw I have an A8Js although I don't think this issue is unique to this model.

I've occasionally had XP go through the initialize routine for USB devices again if they're inserted into a different port, but don't know why - if I let it complete, then it's fine.

Sometimes also my MS wireless mouse won't work when I bring the notebook out of hibernate. This is usually solved by doing a hibernate cycle again, or worst case a cold reboot. Again, don't know why but the problem is intermittent and not terminal, just an annoyance :). Probably some glitch in XP somewhere...

I can understand reinstalling the drivers when the hardware is inserted in a different port (this could be similar to switching desktop cards between slots, the driver has to be reinstalled in that case as well).

Working intermitently with some of the ports is a problem, however... Unless you can solve it by restarting as suggested above. (an annoying solution but if it works use it)

Plugging a USB device into a different port will register it as a new device. This happens in every version of Windows since Windows 98.

If you want your device to work in every port every time, let Windows initialize it once for every port.

Yep, that's basically what I was saying.
