I tried to install Kane's Wrath on my new laptop, but it only gets to a certain point in the installation and then the disc drive starts making a whirring noise, no error message whatsoever!

Its odd because I installed Tiberium Wars without issue, as well as The First Decade (all Command and Conquer :p ).

To make matters worse I just bought a new copy of Kane's Wrath and it STILL stops installing and makes a whirring noise.

    Thanks

    Legacy of Kain?

I know I had an issue with an older Kain game not working because it did not work in Vista.

It may be related to the problem your having.

Best way to test your DVD drive is to use some other game disks.

Oh, sorry: Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath

And it said on the box at least that it was supposed to support Vista too, a friend of mine has it on his laptop and it runs fine.

It's probably an error on the disc or a scratch, but you'd probably have noticed a scratch. It'll make a weird noise when it tries to step down the RPM of the drive to read it at a slower speed when it has problems, then will speed back up... that's probably what you're hearing, you might just want to have the disc replaced if possible. Look at it closely, maybe it just needs a cleaning.

I hate laptop optical drives, mine spins down at strange moments and that can sometimes freeze installs.

Yeah, OP mentioned they got no error message, it will usually take long time for an optical drive to return a read error instead of just retrying and retrying and retrying and...

Unfortunately its not just one disc.

I got a SECOND copy and it STILL doesn't work.

I originally thought it was a scratched disc, until the second copy that I wasted $20 on didn't work either. :(

But what's so weird is that I just installed 3 games without issue.

Hm, do you have anything like daemon tools or any other virtual drive software... sometimes they will interfere with SecuROM or other protected games. You could also try using an external drive if you have one.

    Hmm...that might work.

So you think its a securom thing?

I thought Kane's Wrath didn't have securom?
